Critical Analysis of To Build a Fire by Jack London
The short story of “To Build a Fire” by Jack London provides the reader a very descriptive tale of a man’s journey through Yukon in the dead of the winter. The protagonist faced many challenges that started from the beginning of his journey, from the lack of sunlight during Alaska’s winter months to fending off the extreme weather conditions. To the reader, it seems that the man was not intelligent enough or had the proper instincts to make the journey during these harsh conditions, unlike the dog that followed him With the on start of London’s story, he describes the well-known winter season of the Yukon by indicating the lack of sunlight during the day (London 5). However, the protagonist was not concern about the lack of sunlight and even knew that even in the near future; the sun would only be displayed for a few moments during the day (London 7, 8, 9). Any intelligent person understands that the sun provides the Earth with heat and is required for human life. The protagonist also doesn’t seem to have the mindset of thinking before doing or understanding the results of actions. He understood that the literal content that there was no sun and the weather was very cold, but did not comprehend that the combination of these two missing elements would cause danger in his journey.
