Abstract Patrick White (1912-1990) has an overwhelming stature in the history of Australian literature, not only because he is hitherto the only Australian Nobel Laureate, but also because that he makes a great contribution to Australian literature, with which other writers can hardly compare. When realism is prevailing in Australia, White first brings modernism to Australian literature. He creates an unprecedented unique writing style and influences such brilliant writers as Randolph Stow, Thomas Keneally, Hal Porter and the so-called “White School” writers. White also represents an era in the history of Australian literature. After reviewing the studies on White’s novels, it is found that existing studies on Twyborn are so few that can even hardly be the tip of the iceberg of White study. In existing studies, instead of being the main subject, Twyborn usually appears as a foil character and is criticized by many scholars as one of White’s worst novels. Besides, the interpretations of Twyborn are rather limited; compared with White’s other novels, Twyborn deserves more and diverse interpretations. The first chapter is a summary of White’s novels’ common feature: White likes to set his protagonists in quests. White borrows Odyssey’s framework in The Aunt’s Story, designing a Whitean odyssey for his protagonist. Since then, Whitean odyssey usually appears in his following works; his protagonists face and solve a serious of problems, and then get closer to the meaning of their existence. In Twyborn, the protagonist Eddie also makes a Whitean odyssey from France to Australia and to UK in order to pursue the “complete identity”, becoming a “complete man” who can love both himself and
