Through his motif of failed dreams, John Steinbeck criticizes the accessibility of the American Dream to minority groups. Crooks, the black stable buck, realizes this harsh reality and expresses his experience to Lennie as he says, “Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head” (72). Being the only black character in the novel, Crooks is used to show how this “American Dream” of owning property is not only unattainable for the men on the ranch, but even more so for him as a minority.
