In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan is the reason for Jay Gatsby’s death. The Great Gatsby is a novel that takes place in the upper parts of New York and the era is the 1920’s. Nick Carraway is a poor man who lives next to Gatsby. Jay Gatsby moved to the West Egg to hopefully rekindle his relationship with his previous lover, Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, who is also having a side affair with Myrtle Wilson, who is very poor. All of these things cause drama and tension between everyone. One day they all went to New York and it got very intense. On Gatsby and Daisy’s way home, it is presumed that Gatsby hit Myrtle with a car. When Gatsby was showing his designer clothing, it caused Daisy to be very upset. “He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one...Daisy bent her head into the shirts and began to cry stormily. ‘They’re such beautiful shirts,’ she sobbed. ‘it makes me sad because I’ve never seen such- such beautiful shirts before.’”(Gerald, 92). At this moment, Daisy is not truly crying over shirts. She is crying over the mistake she made. Daisy’s whole life was nothing but selfish actions. When she was with Gatsby, she left him because he didn’t have any money, even though she was in love with him. So when she sees that Gatsby has money, she instantly becomes distraught and wants to be with him instead of the other man she married only for money. Even though she was supposedly in love with Gatsby, she let him die so that she could remain innocent. Daisy and Gatsby’s affair was a motive for Tom’s actions.
