I have spent many hours trying to figure out why skating rinks are failing. This is of the utmost importance now that I am looking to purchasing one. Of the plethora of possibilities, I think I have boiled it down to one major issue...the inability to talk face to face. In my mind, going skating has little to do with the art of skating – it has more to do with socializing. A skating rink is a safe place where you can meet up with your friends and socialize. As texting and other social media platforms began to become the way that young people (and to a degrees the older generation) began to communicate, meeting at the local rink was no longer a priority. A skating rink was no longer needed as a place to meet up with your friends to talk
First off, figure skating is a sport because it requires time and effort. Figure skating is called “One of the hardest sports” by many commentators because it requires the skater to be graceful while trying to not make a mistake. Many people say that Figure skating is just jumping and skating on ice but it is much more. Figure skating requires the skater to get enough momentum to be able to control the jump and land while transitioning to the next trick.. To add, figure skating is a sport where you need to go to classes few times a week in order for you to not forget and keep on improving. Many professional skaters spend most of their lives practicing the same routine many times and auditioning to be let into the contests. “Many skaters do a lot of work off the ice at the gym for strength training, practice yoga for flexibility, and work on cardio to build up
Ann Van middlesworth park is pretty much the center of the local skate scene. What started out as a rough slab of asphalt in a backup parking lot has become a DIY park sent from heaven. You roll up and feel the family like support, you can tell that the AV crew is a well built quite a diverse one. Within that crew is my friends and I. We all have our own set of tricks, but we all fit nicely
To most people, an ice rink is a place to go to spend time with others while clinging onto a bruised wall for two hours. For me, the ice rink is my second home. A place that I’ve dedicated countless hours practicing, working, and teaching in a place where it is winter all year round. From the cold, bitter mornings where you can see your own breath; to the times you catch yourself running over a bump due to the humidity coming from the ceilings dripping on you and the ice every 10 minutes, I spend more time at the rink than my own home. The ice rink is not just a place that I practice, it is a place where have grown accustomed to the feel of the ice and what makes it distinguishable from all the other rinks I have been to.
Whenever I walk into the dance studio at my high school, there is always a certain smell. There is always a slight smell of sweat, passion and a hint of baby powder. Sweat for working hard, passion for loving what they are doing and baby powder to help with turning.

I am a tap dancer. I have been trained in all other forms of dance, of course, but I have always considered myself a tap dancer above all else. To most people, this talent seems to be a pretty straightforward thing, however there is much more to it than meets the eye.

I have been taking ballet classes since I was about 4 years old and it’s one of those things in life that brings me joy. I don’t desire to pursue it on a professional level, but I consider it a hobby.. In ballet class, I utilize my creativity in different ways, whether it’s how I move my body or the way I position myself. Whenever it comes the time to dance individually in the center, this is when I can use my creativity and imagination the most. Unfortunately I don’t always remember the given dance combinations, so it’s not surprising that during one class I ended up in the center of the room, frozen and without a clue of what the next dance move was.
Ever wondered what it would be like to leap through life, twirl right through, as if the world has completely stopped around you? To be able to pause everything in a silence that allows you to hear your own heartbeat? The silence on stage as you perform is a sense of peace within your inner body that is being channeled through a movement of effortless motion. In European history, dance was considered to be a way of celebration for many cultures. Although it was said that dance did require physical agility, dancers were never considered athletes because the movement was not taken seriously. Dance did not become popular in a more skillful way until later on. The debate of dance as a sport is very
During my senior year of high school, I realized the power dance has to expose oneself to a different culture. Previously, I had trained in mainly ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and lyrical within a studio. I got thrown into a high school world cultures dance class. The title of the class was kept vague so that the teacher is free to teach any type of “cultural” dance they feel qualified to teach. The teacher taught the class about Umfundalai, a contemporary African dance technique. The movements were contemporary forms of traditional dances across Africa. Along with learning the movements, I got to learn about the symbolism, history, and origins of each movement. I loved learning about a culture barely taught in schools through the language I love and understand: dance. Since that experience my drive to travel, dance, and learn about the world has increased monumentally. I am also inspired by the stories of my amazing dance teachers’ experiences traveling while doing what they love. I believe their experiences have helped develop their amazing personalities and perspectives which is helpful when creating art.
When we are younger, our imaginations have no limits, especially when it comes to dreaming about what we want to be “when we are older.” Children fantasize about being athletes, singers, astronauts, princesses, superheroes, racecar drivers, and countless other professions, but the most common one among all, is most likely to become a ballerina. I was one of those young girls who was determined to work hard and one day, become a professional ballerina. At the time, I did not know what it took to be a ballerina; I only went to lessons once a week, nevertheless, my parents encouraged my dream and every Saturday morning, dragged me to dance lesson. After a year at the friendliest studio with the sweetest dance teacher, Madame Cate, my parents announced that we were moving to Bangladesh. This move was not only hard because I had to leave all my friends, but was also hard because finding a dance facility there was nearly impossible. After three years of ballet, I made the tough decision to move on due to my lack of interest in the art: thank you to all the dance instructors that made
During a figure skating competition, many required elements must be included in the program for each skater. Depending on what level of competition the skater is in, the techniques and difficulty increases. A triple axel is one of the most difficult figure skating jumps. The skater needs to jump from the outside edge of his or her blade, while moving in a forward rotation, rotating three and a half revolutions in the air, and then landing on the opposite foot which they took off from. A triple axel is a lot more complicated than performing a single or double axel because it requires an enormous amount of strength to get high up enough to have time to spin, as well as the ability to rotate quickly.
The second my feet lifted off the soap-caked floor, I felt different. The skin on my neck was tingling, adrenaline was racing through my body, and my bones were engaged in a newfound excitement. My mother was wrong. The bathroom floor is a fun place to go “figure skating” on soap suds. My sister, Emily, and I began our skating journey at Kent State University, where we had been enrolled in “Learn To Skate” classes for as long as we could remember. Spinning circles faster than a horse around the kitchen table in our socks was a common occurrence. We were perpetually moving.
