The word dark ages is referred as Barbaric times and Intellectual Depression. The historians called it intellectual depression because they think that the little knowledge and invention and innovations is why very little came from the Middle Ages. Many historians didn't give it much thought before labeling it because it was only in the beginning of the Middle Ages that not much happened. But they grouped it all and came to the depiction of labeling it the "Dark Age". Over time, "Dark Ages" also lost meaning. When historians first had first used the term, it was meant as a time of darkness where nothing came out.

First, “The Dark Ages” was the time that followed the collapse of the Western Roman Empire but before the Renaissance from the 5th to 15th century. Very few writings survived during the Dark Ages, so most believe that people during this time were illiterate;

The dark ages, a time period spanning from 500 AD until 1500 AD, is commonly perceived as the worst time in history, solely because of its name. When asked “What is the dark ages generally known for?” many people respond with the black plague or great famines. The main reason for this title is in fact due to a lack of written records and documents lost to history. In reality, the dark ages were not really that dark because a humanitarian king shaped European ideals, religion kept culture alive, and many historical and scientific progressions occurred.

Another party of invaders devastated Gaul, and more than 600 of them died” (Doc C). This all happened in the same year (845) and just shows how often Europe was invaded and ravaged. This evidence was from the abbey of Xanten records, which was made at the time and is a primary source. “The heathen from the North caused trouble in Christendom as usual and grew greater in strength” (Doc C). The Dark Ages occurred right after the fall of the Roman Empire and lasted from about 500 to 900 CE. During this time the population fell in Europe, there were many invasions, towns were constantly robbed, and garbage was left all over fields sometimes destroying the crops that grew there. As historian Frantz Funck-Brentano states in document one, "They burned down the churches and then departed with a crown of captives". People would be taken out of their homes by barbarians and be forced to leave with them. Conditions were so hectic during this time, some believed that society had no government. Which was true in a sense because people were constantly being killed and hurt, and the people attacking others would rarely ever get caught for these crimes or punished. During the 400-1400 CE, there were barbarians and Vikings that killed many people, plagues that were fatal, and cruelty that was all around. Yet that wasn’t the only things that happened. A dark age is a time of cultural decline. In spite of the cruelty, there were many good things like a judicial system, schools and education, and architectural advancements in gothic cathedrals.

The dark ages were a time where chaos ruled everything and no one felt safe. The term dark age came from an Italian Scholar named Petrarch. He called it the dark age because he compared it to the classical period before. In the dark ages many terrifying things happened like the Black Death, the crusades, the viking attacks, and many more. Europe was in a dark age from 500 to 1500 AD.

The term Dark Ages relatively defines as when a civilization faces starvation, war, disease, internal struggles, less innovative people, and unvalued education. This term was coined by a famous Petrarch-Italian scholar named Thomas Aquinas,when he compared the dark age to the classical period which was in a Golden age. The term Golden age occurs when a civilization has new inventions, efficiency, education, high literacy, a big population, good health, impressive architecture, peace, surplus of food, and enforced laws. The time period of Medieval Europe was 500 AD-1500 AD with the events of the black death epidemic, the crusades, harsh government, and a small amount of people going to school to get an education. The “Dark Ages” means a time of violence, no innovation, lack of educated people, small population and isolated communities, lots of disease, no new building projects, war, lack of trade, chaos and anarchy, famine, and political instability. The person who coined it was Petrarch, a french scholar who compared it to the classical period. The beginning of the dark ages was during 500 AD which lasted until 1500 AD. During this time period the most famous events was the “The Crusades” and “Black Death.” During this period Europe was clearly in a “Dark Age.”

Europe fell into the Dark Ages on August 24th, 410 A.D. Rome was one of the greatest empires at the time. That is, before August. It controlled most trade routes, and a lot of land. Then came the day where the Visigoths invaded the Visigoths were western branches of the nomadic tribes of Germanic. Famine, plague, persecutions, and persistent warfare followed. Half of the healthy people living in Rome died. The thugs looted markets, causing a downfall in supplies such as food and clothing. After that, traders brought rats over to europe to the crushed, once powerful empire.

Many people debate over whether Medieval Europe (500 AD-1500 AD) was a growth age or a dark age. The Term dark age came from a famous Italian scholar, Petrarch, and it means that there was violence, no new inventions, lots of diseases, war, not much trade and much more violence in the world. When I say the dark ages, what comes to mind? No, actually try to think, does a dark and motionless castle come to mind, or is it the Magna Carta, the crusades, and the French revolution. The dark ages are a mixed expression. Some see it as a period of nameless wars and hard times just by the name. others see it as a time of peace and some important activities.

The Dark Ages fall within a period of time after the fall of the Roman Empire and before the Renaissance. Historians do not know much about this time, but with what they know, readers can infer how dark the Middle Ages were. Before Rome fell, Germanic tribes invaded Rome. One of the main reasons Rome fell was because of the recent invasions along with many other events of the time. These invasions caused intense moments in Rome before the Middle Ages or the so-called Dark Ages. The Renaissance, or rebirth, is the enlightenment period, or the upbringing from the Middle Ages. Economic downfalls, natural disasters, external invaders, harsh punishments created the Dark Ages.
