Darry Is ponyboy and Sodas older brother. Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn’t love him because he’s always yelling at him, or he’s always yelling at him for the smallest of things without knowing the reason as to why he’s always on Ponyboy’s case. Pony always talks about how Soda rarely ever gets into trouble and how he thinks Darry loves him more than anyone else, everyone else always says that Darry does love him but Ponyboy is the type of boy that has to see or hear something from that person in order for him to believe what everyone else is saying. Somewhere near the beginning of the story, Ponyboy says that Darry is really strict when it comes to him, as shown in the text when Ponyboy states, “Darry hollard at me all the time… He doesn’t
He didn‘t make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. I hadn‘t seen him cry in years, not even when Mom and Dad had been killed and in that second what Soda and Dally and Two-Bit had been trying to tell me came through. Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me and ―that was his silent fear then—of losing another person he loved.” Ponyboy and Dally have always had a rocky relationship. Ponyboy resents Dally as he thinks he is too controlling.
He always wants to give him the life he wanted but couldn’t have one way to make sure of that is that Darry always makes sure Pony gets good grades by checking his homework. This way pony can succeed in school and not be a dropout like soda. He wants him to be the one that can make a difference in the world, and Darry realizes that, that person is pony. A quote from Ponyboy from the book is “I didn’t do to bad in math, because Darry checked my homework and made me study.”(Hinton
The Outsiders display how adversity can help people find the real meaning of actions. Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn’t care about him and believes he’s too strict as said in this passage “Me and Darry just don't dig each other. I could never please him… He never hollered at Sodapop, even when Soda dropped out of school or got tickets for speeding.
In chapter 3, Darry and Ponyboy got into a fight, in which Darry hit Ponyboy. This fight resulted in Ponyboy and Johnny killing a Soc, runnning away, going missing for five days, and getting Ponyboy injured and Johnny dead. The boys returned home when they were rushed to the hospital after being wounded from a fire. Once Ponyboy came to in the hospital, he saw Darry, crying. "Darry didn't like me... he had driven me away that night... he had hit me...he didn't give a hang about me... Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying... Darry did care about me..." (98). Ponyboy ran to Darry, hugged him, and started sobbing. The two brothers stood in the waiting room, hugging and crying together. Daarry never scolded Ponyboy about him running away, because he was focused on Pony's health. He stayed at the hospital that night. Darry loves Pony, and now Pony knew.
One moment in the book when Darry lashes out on Ponyboy is when he comes home late one night. A quote I found from that night in the novel is “He didn’t use to be like that… we used to get along okay… before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can’t stand me” (Pg. 51). When Ponyboy says “Now he just can’t stand me,” it shows that he thinks Darry hates him but in reality, Darry has high expectations for Ponyboy because he gets good grades and just wants to keep him safe because their parents died so Darry is the like the parent now. Another quote I found that also shows Ponyboy really doesn’t like Darry is “He thinks I’m a pain in the neck. He likes Soda-everybody likes Soda-but he can't stand me I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home somewhere, and he’d do it, too, if soda’s let him.” (pg. 42). Just so you know, this was after the movies when Two-bit, Johnny, Marcia, and Cherry were walking home. So, I think this quote is also about how Ponyboy thinks Darry doesn’t like him because he says things like he thinks if Soda weren’t alive, Darry would just leave him which shows Ponyboy isn’t very fond of Darry. This evidence shows that Ponyboy has the thought that Darry dislikes him. Therefore, Ponyboy hates him because of the way he is treated.
At the end of the book Ponyboy finally comes to terms with the deaths of Johnny and Dally, and he finally realizes that violence is not the answer when he makes up with Darry. Darry and Ponyboy are shouting at each other, and Ponyboy asks Sodapop to take his side. This causes Sodapop to rush out of the house, and Ponyboy and Darry chase after him. When they finally catch up Sodapop tells them he feels sick of being pulled apart by their fights. Ponyboy sympathizes with Sodapop as he says in the text: “Darry and I did play tug of war with him, with never a thought to how much it was hurting him.” Ponyboy suddenly understands what his fighting with Darry has done to Sodapop, and later in their conversation Ponyboy realizes why he never got along with Darry: “I saw that I had expected Darry to do all the understanding without even trying to
An important aspect of Soda's personality is his love and caring for those around him. The most important people in Sodapop’s life are his brothers, Darry and Ponyboy, and he would go to the end of the earth to help them. When their parents passed away, all three of the boys were greatly affected, but Soda tried to keep things as normal as possible for Ponyboy. When Darry is explaining to Ponyboy how he got his concussion he says, “You got a concussion from getting kicked in the head – Soda saw it... I’ve never seen him so mad. I think he could have whipped anyone, in the state he was in...”(Page 113) This conversation makes us realize how much Sodapop wants to protect Ponyboy, and his very deep love for his younger brother. He feels obliged to look after, and stick up for Ponyboy, his ‘kid brother.’ After the rumble,
Darry, the oldest brother have had many conflicts with Soda and Pony, which made him change during this novel. First, one event that made Darry change was when he slapped his little brother, Pony when he came home late. Pony ran away for a few days because he thought that Darry didn’t want him as a brother anymore. Darry was so sorry, sad, and mad at himself for slapping Pony.
At the end of Chapter 1, Ponyboy says “I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me.” but before that, he stated that he didn’t care that Darry didn’t love him and that Darry thought Ponyboy was a burden and someone that he could yell at. Ponyboy said that he didn’t care about Darry at all but he often lied to himself. What Ponyboy means is that he does care about Darry but he just can’t accept the fact. However, the reason why he does it could be a variety of factors and reasons. It may be because he is too prideful or arrogant to admit it to himself. Perhaps he is just trying to save himself from the pain of unreciprocated feelings that Darry seems to give out. Maybe Ponyboy is trying to get back at Darry by trying to convince himself
Darry has to take care of his brothers and he does with his friends too .Darry lets his friends sleep on the couch when they don't have anywhere to go . Darry works two jobs just to be able to take care of his fam . Darry manages to keep a roof over his family's head . Darry somehow is unappreciated by his youngest sibling Ponyboy he is so ungrateful.
Ponyboy has no parents and Darry is the eldest brother, therefore, Darry must be responsible for Ponyboy and make sure he is safe. Ponyboy doesn’t always understand the way Darry protect him. One night Jonny and Ponyboy went out and didn’t
In the text on page 50 it states, “He should never yell at Soda. No one should ever holler at my brother. "You don't yell at him!" I shouted. Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” This is when the relationship took a turn for the worse, Darry out of anger hit Ponyboy because Ponyboy got home extremely late. On page 50 it also states, “It was plain to me that Darry didn’t want me around. And I wouldn’t stay if he did. He wasn’t ever going to hit me again.” This shows that the one little mistake that Darry made, is the end of the straw for Ponyboy. On pg 51, it states "He didn't use to be like that... we used to get along okay... before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can't stand me.” This shows that Darry is struggling to cope with the loss of his mom and died as much as the others. He feels that it is his job to be like the parent, and because of Ponyboy being the youngest, he gets to have the “parent” Darry and not the “brother” Darry, their relationship with each other suffers from
As Ponyboy’s guardian Darry has to set a good example in order to be an overall good guardian. An example of him not doing that is in chapter 12 “And anytime you don't like the way I'm running things around here, you can just get out, ALRIGHT?”(Hinton 173 and 174). Consequently when Darry said that he was motivating Ponyboy to run away. This is why Darry also has to make wise decisions around Ponyboy because Ponyboy does look up to him.
Ponyboy takes everything that Darry says the wrong way, and friends are always trying to make him understand that Darry loves him but he doesn't get it. “ Darry didn't like me . . . Darry hollered at me all the time . . . he didn't give a hang about me . . .” (Pg.98). The conflict resolved in the middle of the book when Ponyboy is waiting in the hospital when Sodapop and Darry come and give him hug where Ponyboy understood why Darry was so hard on him, he cared. That didn't last long, because after Johnny and Dally had died, Ponyboy started low grade which upset Darry and so they fought about it, until one night when Soda gets the mail he had sent to Sandy(His ex girlfriend) not at all opened, Ponyboy and Darry start to fight again and so Soda runs out of the house. When Pony and Darry caught up to him he was crying and telling them that he was the middleman and was in a tug o’ war and is being made to choose one or another, so Soda asked them to stop fighting and start listening to each other. Ponyboy versus himself is even more complex than this conflict between Pony and Darry, Ponyboy is fighting with
Darry has assumed the responsibility of guardianship for Ponyboy and Sodapop, since the death of their parents. He no longer sees them as siblings, but rather as responsibility. Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry have unconditional love for each other. They give each other support, love, care, and nurture each other. They had their ups and downs, comparable to a blood family.
