The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. This brings up questions that will be answered in this paper. Should slaves be American citizens? Is it morally correct for one to own another human? Does the Dred Scott decision contradict The Declaration of Independence which states that every man is created equal?

Bass reeves were one of the greatest old west legends. He was born in Paris, Texas in 1837. Bass Reeves served as one of the greatest and first black African American deputy sheriff Marshall Bass Reeves earned his place in history by being one of the most effective lawmen in Indian Territory, bringing in more than 3,000 outlaws and helping to tame the lawless territory. However throughout his occupation as a lawman he has killed 14 men during his service. Reeves always said that he "never shot a man when it was not necessary for him to do so in the discharge of his duty to save his own life." Over the 35 years that Bass Reeves served as a Deputy United States Marshal, he earned his place in history by being one of the most effective lawmen.

Jeff Karpell was a standout outfielder for the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball program. His freshman campaign he posted the longest hit streak by reaching base safely in seven consecutive games. Karpell also led all freshmen in hitting with a .313 batting average. Karpell really stood out as a sophomore earning All-Northeast Conference honors with a .337 average, which put him 3rd on the team and 9th in the NEC. During his senior season Karpell threw out 9 base runners, which is good enough to put him first for most single season outfield assists. Karpell’s efforts are still shown in the FDU record books where he ranks: 7th in single season hits (64), 7th in triples (4), 3rd in runs batted in (59). Along with his single season achievements Karpell is also 7th in career batting average (.343), 7th in at bats (571), 5th in hits (196), 3rd in triples (9), and 2nd in RBIs (145).

The south for a good while was always fond of using slavery as a cheap source of work. The increase in the number of slaves was when John Rolfe became one of the first to cultivate tobacco in the so called “New World back then in the 17th century. There was good money to be made about the amount of labor that went into the tobacco cultivation was harch, hence why slaves were used. Ever since then, it is obvious to note that slaves dominated the aspect of southern life. Whether that be economically, socially or politically, slaves played an important role in each category.

Robert Davis was an African American man. He was not a “thug,” he was not a “drunk,” he was a retired school teacher from New Orleans who was in his sixties. He was brutally attacked by three police officers. He suffered a broken nose and other broken bones in his face. The incident was recorded and went viral. Davis was arrested but faced no charges. Three police officers were charged but only two went to trial. In the end, two of the police officers were fired — the third never made it to trial because he had committed suicide. Davis was compensated for the assault.

Jamar clark African American, 24 years old was shot by the minneapolis police on november 15 2015. Two officers were involved Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze, protestants of black life matters and other institutions that support civil rights are unsatisfied because no charges were pressed against the two officer. In my opinion the death of Jamar Clark is not justified with enough evidence that proves the innocence of the officers.

Refugees from Bhutan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Liberia, and Vietnam come in waves from every corner of the globe. Lately there has been an increasingly number of refugees from the Congo, due to the civil war that has been ongoing for many years. Currently, there is a population of 13,000 individuals who have made Clarkston their home away from home. We ask, what brings the refugees to this little city? Many wonder how this has happened, how Clarkston has developed its own little cultural sense of identity? Refugees started settling in Clarkston back in the early 1990's, and it's been the resettlement hub ever since. The reason so many refugees settled in Clarkston, Georgia is due to the low- income based apartments, easy access to public transit and it’s near the interstate, which can take you to any part of Atlanta.
