December 7, 1941 was one of the most devastating days in the history of America. Over 2,000 American citizens were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and over 1,000 American citizens were wounded. The Japanese successfully destroyed over 180 American aircraft in addition to two American battleships, the U.S.S. Arizona and the U.S.S. Oklahoma. Many people could say this was one of the most successful surprise attack ever pulled off in all of history. There were quite a few different incidents that led up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were a few different events that led up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan taking over Manchuria, ignoring the League of Nations when they reprimanded this behavior, joining the Axis powers, and the embargo put on them by the United States were just a few of the incidents that led up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. It all started with Japan deciding to take over Manchuria. Manchuria was a small resource-rich province in China. In 1931, Japan executed their plan and invaded Manchuria. They took Manchuria and turned it into one of their own states by the name of Manchukuo. After the invasion of Manchuria, in 1937, the Japanese continued their expansion. They took over more of China killing some 300,000 people. By the end of World War II, China would suffer over fourteen million losses. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese launched an air raid on Pearl Harbor. It came as a complete and utter surprise to the Americans. It started at 7 AM on a Sunday morning. Two United States Army privates were just getting done with their shift when they saw something on their radar. They immediately called the information center on the other side of the island. They reached an army lieutenant. The lieutenant assured them that it was just a fleet of American B-17s. This was a major mistake made during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Carefully, Japanese aircraft flew through the mountains of Oahu avoiding radar detection. The attack started at 7:58 AM. Forty-three fighters, fifty-one dive-bombers, forty-nine high-level bombers, and forty torpedo bombers attacked Pearl Harbor killing thousands of men and injuring thousands more and sunk or damaged eighteen United States warships. It so happened, that at the time of the attack, all three of the Pacific Fleet’s aircraft carrier were not at the harbor at the time of the attack. this was crucial to the success of the United States Navy in the Pacific.
