The declaration of independence was approved by congress on July 4, 1776. It was the birth of certificate of the United States of America. The Declaration of independence helped to unite what has been a divided land. Thirteen English colonies had chosen to walk the dangerous path of independence. On July 8, 1776, the American celebrated because they were a citizen of the United States of America.

The Declaration of independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. He was a delegate from Virginia at the continental congress. He was chosen by the committee of five to be the main author of the declaration. The committee had five members who were roger Sherman of Connecticut, John Adams of Massachusetts, Robert Livingston of New York Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson. This meeting was known as the first continental congress. They wrote a long list of complaints to the king but he paid no attention to their rights. A second continental congress was taken. During the spring of 1776, each town and city sent a letter to their representatives in congress voting for independence. Richard Henry Lee, one of the best speakers in the continental congress said these "United colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states. The members organized and agreed to fight the British and asked for help to the French government to fight for their independence. These members of the continental congress decided to follow the people wishes for freedom and declared the American colonies independent. American patriots loved the declaration.
