Fear occurs simply because you are not living with reality, you are living in your mind, recreating unlikely occurrences. Fear is always about what is going to happen next and that mean it does not necessarily exist in reality. Another truth about fear is if it non-existent, then your fear is completely made within your imagination. Insanity, non-existential fear. Living in socially acceptable amounts of insanity, while being afraid of something that does not exist, it corresponds with fear. Boundaries are built up, creating walls of fear. I am scared of open heights with even the slightest chance of slipping. The reason I am terrified of open heights is because you are facing death. One wrong move and you will be closer to the ground, only not in the way you expected. Although I am terrified of open heights, I still crave the adventure and adrenaline rush you get from it as you are climbing next to a steep cliff. In four months, I will be travelling to the Dominican Republic to teach English and participate in building a school for the village. During this period of time, we will also be hiking in the national park. This national park contains forests, and of course steep cliffs. Even though I am terrified, I will still be participating in the hike, to prove to myself that fear with realities is still a mental came that can be overcame with a certain mindset. You can only be afraid if you allow the fear to get to you, inside your thoughts. Fear is a thought that you made inside your own mind. Your mind is what controls your fears, and it can be conquered. With that being said, fear is productive: “Why? Some of the reasons are simple and obvious. To show that we can, that we are not afraid.” (King, 1982, p. 357). Fear is an adaptive behavior and it is an ability that has allowed us as humans to survive predators and natural disasters. Most fear is learned, spiders, snakes, the dark, these are called natural fears. We are born with only two innate fears. Fear of falling and fear of loud sounds. When people hear loud sounds, you most likely will react with a fight or flight type response. Phobias are persistent, irrational fears and can be extinguished with effective therapy. The purpose of fear is to protect us from danger. Facial expressions, as well as physical and emotional reactions, are main components of fear.
By definition, fear is “a feeling of respect and wonder for something very powerful,” and affects people's everyday lives. Fear can be influenced from a variety of occasions: personal experience, societal opinions, and environmental expectations. Since the creation of man, fear has existed in everyone as an instinct to protect the individual from harmful or dangerous situations. The origin of fear does not come from a specific time and place, but comes as a instinct that has been apart of human nature since the species’ creation. Fear drives many individuals’ actions or thoughts due to the possibility of harmful scenarios that can hurt the individual's personal, or social gain.
I’ve always thought fear was an intangible thing; an idea that cannot be touched or heard. How strange then, that I feel it in my bones and hear it in the voices and see it in the faces of all those misfortunates who were attendants of the plane crash alongside me. Today is the day I realize fear is much more than an emotion. I believe the actions we take define us; actions taken in fear more so. Fear blinds us, reveals us, immobilizes us, but in some cases, in my case, fear is a catalyst for bravery and selflessness.
Fear is an emotion or thought that is strange and at times indescribable, but often felt in our everyday lives. It is the profound feeling you get when you feel as if you are being threatened with danger or when you feel that something bad is going to happen. At times, fear can keep you from succeeding or doing what you need to do; it can limit the abilities you have and cause you to procrastinate or make reckless decisions. Anxiety is also another factor of fear, and it is when people are randomly afraid of something, but don’t know why they’re scared. Fear is an unpleasant and disliked emotion, but at times it is good for people and their safety. Our brain is always looking out for things that can harm us and when detected, it prepares us so that our bodies to avoid danger. In situations where one does not feel any fear, it may endanger them by making one choose to do irresponsible things and make wrong decisions that could lead into self injuries. Therefore, fear is a good factor to have and although it is something awful to feel, it helps you in the incidents needed most.
Some may even say fear is natures way of keeping us alive. When hearing this I made the connection. Even going back to the caveman days, when we saw that bear or lion coming at us it was the fear that saved us. We ran for safety or we hid and fought. Fear today is an everyday part of life. All viable human fears stem from the same root: a lack of the sense of accomplishment. When a person lives without a purpose or any achievements in the world, he or she ceases to exist as a human being. In a literal sense, human fear solely exists as a state of uncertainty that prevents individuals from reaching their goals; the fear of failure alone prevents individuals from participating in new activities. Human fear only exists because humans mentally dwell on the petty aspects of their lives. Therefore, human fear only remains within the intellectual, psychological facet of any specific individual.
Every one of us has our own views of fear. Some fear simple stuff, for example, not wanting to take a bath and some fear stuff as in ghosts and spirits. We all look at things differently and that might not ever change. We have so many different opinions and outlooks on things that make it harder to realize what everyone would need to be content. Fear is a vital response to any perceived physical or emotional danger in the environment around us. We as a species fear everything from heights, to the dark, to even spiders and clowns, all of which our brains perceive to be a threat to our very survival. This survival mechanism has served to keep the human race safe for thousands of years, but what was once meant to keep us safe is know having a devastating effect on people 's lives. Fear causes people to live in constant state of anxiety that can force them to give up on their dreams and never truly reach their full potent. It is necessary for people, especially in today’s far safer time period, to learn how to conquer our fears, thereby freeing themselves from its control.

Do we let it’s terrifying surface consume us and hold us back from partaking in something we wish to do, or do we let it fuel us, empower us, into doing something that we never thought we could? Do you hold yourself back and hide from that fear and hope it goes away just like the monsters under your bed, or do you take control, and fight? Maya Angelou talks about locking yourself up in a cage full of your fears and doubts and trying to escape and become free of your struggles. In Langston Hughes poem, “Mother to Son,” Hughes talks about how a son is struggling to go through life and he wants to give up because of his fears and doubts, but his mother is trying to persuade him into sticking with it and continue living life. Finally, Robert Frost discusses how your fears shouldn’t hold you back from continuing life and choosing a path to go on. Everyone has to face their fears at some point, it just depends on the person if they choose to fight it or not. Whether you're grabbing the bull by the horns, or you’re closing the gate. You’re looking your fear right in the face.
Fear is a unique feeling, you can overcome a fear. We all have fears, but we can decide if we want them to continue in our life or to disappear. I feel that I will be able to overcome my fear once I'm in the university and start my path. My biggest fear is not accomplished my personal goals, and like any person I'm afraid to confront them and begin. Since a young age, I always had a fear of heights and so when I was asked to take part in jumping off a bridge (bungee jumping) in South Africa, my natural reaction was to say no, and that is exactly what I did. But while others were getting ready for the jump I asked myself one question; why am I scared of heights. I knew I had to face it one day. It was in a fight of flight situation and so, on the spur of the moment I decided fight. It was a decision I have never regretted even though minutes before the jump I was very scared. As I leaped of the bridge I felt like I was on the top of the world. Adrenalin flowed in my body like blood. I felt alive. To this day I cannot forget the incident. Not because of how scary it was but because of how I was able to conquer my fear. It taught me to always try new things and to be adventurous. Not everyone enjoys being, but on the other hand many people enjoy the experience. Fear is what we feel an emotional response, a response that triggers a change in the organ and brain function, as well as in behavior. The mind may occur when it face the danger such as a confrontation. Fear can lead us to hide, fight or flee. Sometime fear can also drive us to irritate our own edge and what we long to do.
