Definition Essay: Different Types Of Lying

A lie is considered a false statement given to fool someone. At some point throughout the day everyone will stretch the truth. Are lies just really some version of the truth or are they bold and deliberate? Lying is discussed in-depth in "The Ways We Lie" by Stephanie Ericsson and in the article "Is Lying Bad for Us" by Richard Gunderman. The two articles discuss the types of lies, reasons people lie and the consequences suffered by all. It can be determined after reading the texts that lying causes undue stress and telling the truth is beneficial in more ways than one.

We are told from a very young that we should tell the truth, and that lying is wrong; an immoral action which we should not engage in. Yet lying is a large part of daily life, whether it be our lying to others or others lying to us, around us, or lying in ways that affect our lives. Oftentimes, the lies we tell are for social gain; for the purposes of esteem, affection, or respect. We lie as a way to manage others impressions of us. Studies have found that women are generally more intimate in their interactions, which would suggest that they lie less. Once people know that a person habitually lies, they do not take that person as seriously. Being honest demonstrates self-respect and respect for others. Honesty is appealing and engaging to others. Honesty also sets a good example for people who look up to that person. People will become closer and have faith in an authentic person. An honest person invites authentic and real friendships. Imagine if a friend overhears a lie told by another peer, it is possible that it could damage the relationship. It can be difficult to regain their trust once they are aware of the regular lying. People frequently tell lies to bypass sharing truths that feel uncomfortable or awkward. Lying should be avoided because it is important to share true judgment and care for others. Lying typically ruins relationships whether they are personal or work-related. It is clear that lying creates skepticism and disbelief. Most people will stop asking liars for advice on personal issues because they know they will not get truthful information. Friendships are often broken because of lies that get too big to keep lying about. Lying hides who people really are. To many people, a lie has little significance. Some people tell lies as a way to cover something up, make a different name for themselves, or just to make excuses. No matter what the situation, my father has constantly reminded me that the truth will set you free, and as I get older even though I am still in my youth, the more I realize the truth and importance of that statement. To me a lie is a form of disloyalty, the less you respect the person the more you lie to them as a way to cover up your true identity. A lie is an inaccurate statement to convey a false impression. A person tells an average of at least 2 lies per day. A lie can cause happiness but can also cause multiple tragedies in many different lives. The person telling the lie is not the only one being affected, many other people can get involved and their lives will be changed forever. Arthur Miller's classic The Crucible is written upon all different types of lying, and how a single lie can cause tragedies to many people.

To lie means to make an untrue statement with the intent to deceive, according to the Webster’s dictionary. It also means to simply create a false or misleading statement on purpose. There are also many synonyms to the word “lie,” such as: prevaricate, equivocate, palter, and fib. The word lie happens to be the most blunt of this group. “Prevaricate” softens the bluntness of a lie by implying quibbling or confusing the issue. This form of lying is common in courtroomms and press conferences by lawyers and politicians. “Equivocate” implies using words having more than one sense in an attempt to say one thing but to mean another. She also explains the reason why we lie and what we lie about. The main types of lies that she talks about are social lies, peacekeeping lies, protective lies and trust keeping lies. Lying the one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him “just assumed that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit.”(Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth.It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. “ While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere.” (Dehghani,Ethics) We know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the person will be truthful. Deception is a vague term as deception can be used to help people or it can be used to hurt people. In Huckleberry Finn, Huck tells a white lie in order to help his friend Jim. However, lying can also cause pain. Lying can hurt others and hurt one’s reputation. Some believe that if you cheat or lie once then people would always be skeptical of you.

The liar wants to get away with something while deceiving. By doing this conscious act of deceiving, a liar must know the truth yet state the opposite and then continue this lie. A liar wants to get something out of this lie, and they do this by hiding the truth that they know about. A liar respects the truth, and although they state the untruth, they know that there is a distinction between the truth and the lie. The liar knows what is false and what is true but chooses to carry on with what is false to get something.

According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the traditional definition of lying is “to make a believed-false statement to another person with the intention that the other person believe that statement to be true” (Mahon). In other words, a big part of lying in the above definition is intent. While a person may have good intentions when they give out the truth all at once, that route may sometimes be harmful for the person being told. Truth given out in small doses is still the truth and learning the truth in small doses is better than never learning the truth at all.

Socrates is a man of great controversy. He has been portrayed as many different personalities such as a sophist to a great philosopher to just a vocal old man. The true nature of Socrates is to be questioned. He spoke his thoughts on life and what his philosophy on life was. A couple arguments that he spoke about really stood out about lying. These arguments had brute force and were made very clear through his dialogue. According to his dialogue, he felt that there were two different types of lies.

Well deception can be defined in many ways, but it was termed by Vrij (Vrij, 2000, p.6) as a successful or unsuccessful deliberate attempt, without forewarning, to create in another a belief, which the communicator considers to be untrue. Telling lies is a daily life event, which varies in quite complex ways depending on the situation the person is in and the person being lied to.

What are lies? A lie is defined as follows: To make a statement that one knows to be false, especially with the intent to deceive. There are several ways that lies are told for instance, there are white lies, lies of omission, bold faced lies, and lies of exaggeration. No matter what type of lie that one chooses to tell many people believe that lies do more harm than good.

Lies can be one kind of believe and have fun. For example, if the father and mother tell their kids about Christmas has Santa Claus, who gives Christmas presents to their kids. Some kids usually believe in Santa Claus. In the future, the kids will know it is not true, but they will think it was a good memory in their childhood! I think it is a good way to use lie. Lying can be fun, but doesn’t use it in a bad way on other person because it will lets the person get hurt like my classmate.
