In the past, the Democratic party was known as the conservative, traditional party that fully supported state government while the Republican party was a supporter of the federal government control. The Republican party began as “Lincoln’s party” which caught the attention and support of the colored voters. In contrast, the Democratic party was predominantly white during this time with ideas to keep the rights of the state and the traditions of the South. Though these two parties have opposing views, they began to clash and redirect their beliefs. Over time the two main political parties have changed their platforms based on the issues of desegregation, racism in the South and placement of federal government.

Unlike the examples of indirect political influence previously examined in this paper, the concept of Republican Mothers, and their influence, extends well past the revolution itself. Although women were still unable to influence politics through direct means, their influence as Republican Mothers demonstrated unprecedented political power and power that lasted well past the revolution itself.

The Democratic Party of the 1800's believed in limited government and dreamed about an agrarian country. They believed freedom was about having control of their own lives, and not having the government interfere with their lives. Many saw it as the party of the working man. Jacksonian Democrats largely controlled the presidency years prior to Civil War. With a few losses to Whigs in the elections of the 1840's. These Democrats wanted further limitations of federal power, promoted state power, saw themselves as the party of the common man. This was appealing to the hard working man who wanted to find success in America. The party despised privilege and aristocratic behavior. They were against the banking industry and Northern industrialists.

The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers that set out for California, on their journey they took a "short cut" that was meant to cut time and distance. Their trip was delayed by a series of mistakes and they were forced to spend the winter trapped in the mountains. Only a portion of the group survived the harsh winter months and they did so by resorting to cannibalism. Nearly two centuries after that event, we can learn that the American dream can only be achieved through sound decision making. The Democratic convention for the Election of 1860 was held from April 23rd to May 3rd at Charleston, South Carolina. During this convention there was a disagreement over the slavery policy, so some of the Southern delegates withdrew from the ballot. The party wasn’t able to nominate a candidate at this convention, therefore they held a second convention from June 18th to June 23rd in Baltimore, Maryland. At this second convention, the party nominated Stephen Arnold Douglas as president with Herschel Johnson as his vice president after they defeated John Breckinridge. Soon after, conflict arose so a large number of mostly Southern Democrats nominated John Cabell Breckinridge as their presidential candidate with Joseph Lane as his vice president. Douglas and Breckinridge ended up becoming the candidates for the Democratic party during the election.
