There is a diverse collection of baseball stadiums around the nation, and they each have unrivaled qualities that make them home to America’s favorite pastime – a game played on diamonds. But there’s only one ballpark like PNC Park, which is the notable home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Travel guides and sports writers alike rave about the park’s view of the city skyline and praise their unique selection of sandwiches from an esteemed Pittsburgh restaurant. But what truly sets this spectacle apart is the soul of the place. The park itself beats with a heart of black and gold that the thousands of unwavering fans fuel with their enduring loyalty, and grows stronger with every cry of “Raise the Jolly Roger.” When Pittsburgh faithful enter the park, they feel as if they’ve returned home.
Over 35,000 supporters have traveled from different day jobs, backgrounds, and family situations to share in the experience of one game. Though you probably won’t meet these people who are packed close next to you in this stadium in your everyday life, your hearts will all plunge one minute and soar the next as you yell at the opposing team and hope for the Bucs to score a home run so that you’ll get a free Denny’s meal. To your left, a group of middle-aged men with scruffy beards, sweaty t-shirts, and heavy workers boots sit with massive cans of beer in their hands, which come close to spilling each time they throw their hands up in anger towards the “blind” umpire. A straggler in the front
Running, catching, and hitting are some types of actions used in the game of baseball.
It was a nice and sunny day, with birds chirping and the smell of freshly cut grass. I felt the leather on my baseball glove and the delicious taste of cereal. I’m ready to play some baseball.
Many people don't understand the point in playing baseball. Why would someone swing a stick, hit a ball, and try to get back to where they started before the ball returns? What pleasure is there in that? Why not participate in a sport like wrestling or track where there is an obvious level of individual improvement and therefore pleasure. Well, I play baseball because of the love I have for the sport, and because of the feeling that overwhelms me every time I walk onto a baseball field. When I walk onto a field I am given the desire to better myself not only as an athlete, but also as a person. The thoughts and feelings I get drive me to work hard towards my goals and to be a better person. The most relevant
There are many question about how the great game of baseball originally started and how it has grown to become Americas game that so many of us enjoy so much as little kids until till we die. Baseball is one of the only games today where the rules of the game have stayed the same since a guy named Abner Doubleday first evolved the game in 1845. Then he went on to be a Civil War hero shortly after as the game of Baseball became Americas beloved national pastime.
The game of baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday, in 1839- 177 years ago from today. Baseball has been, and is still today, known as America’s favorite pastime; additionally, due to its extensive history and partaking it monumental events, it can as well serve as a great topic to use in a story or poem. Poet Dale Ritterbusch, uses the game of baseball along with metaphors in his poem as a vehicle to write about a more substantial subject in poetry, the Vietnam War. His poem, “Behind the Plate”, can be simply over-looked to one as just a poem about an overweight catcher; nonetheless, when closely examined, it has a deeper meaning. Authors Michael Cocchiarale and Scott Emmert, both agree with the statement that baseball is a great outlet for further analysis of a more important subject: “Writers have seen sports, particularly baseball, as a useful vehicle for cultural and epistemological analysis” (Cocchiarale).
Baseball is an immensely popular American game, known as the "national pastime," played between two teams of nine players each. The basic implements used in the game are a leather-covered ball, wooden bats for hitting the ball, and gloves for catching it. Baseball is played on a large scale in Latin America, Japan, and other places besides the United States, but it is in the United States that it thrives both as a participant's and spectator's sport. It is played at its highest level in the United States and two Canadian cities, where 26 teams make up the American and National Leagues (each with two divisions, East and West). Combined, these leagues are called major-league (professional) baseball.
With two outs and the tying run on second base, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant scooped up a slow dribbler down the third base line and fired a rocket over to Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo for the final out of the 2016 Major League World Series. Not only did that throw end one of the greatest baseball games of all time, but it also ended a historic 108-year World Series drought for the Chicago Cubs. Packed with intrigue and more drama than a Shakespearean play, this memorable contest had me on the edge of my seat for over five and a half hours, one of the longest games ever played in the postseason. By the end, I was exhausted but rejuvenated, feeling the joy alongside the Cubbies. I did not feel this way because I am a fan of Chicago, but a fan of baseball and of life - which is meant to be filled with drama and excitement.
With upwards of ten million people participating in the sport of baseball in the United States alone, it is apparent that baseball is one of the world’s most popular sports. Throughout the years, the sport of baseball has evolved from a humble game played on empty sandlots to “America’s national pastime.” The game has come a long way, but how did this game come to be? Everything has its humble beginnings, and baseball is no different. Games that resemble baseball have been around for centuries, and they have led to the development of baseball itself.
The beginning of baseball has had it twist on who started the game and who made the rules to the game. The sport we know as baseball was original name stickball before it became an organized sport. Baseball was a game that many just played as part of their moderate exercise for recreational purpose or time and they used the game to stay in shape. It was usually a middle class white -collar worker who played the game.
There are two styles in baseball fields, the modern ones and the classic ones. At US Cellular Field, they destroyed the best part of the stadium. They changed the classic lollipops. The lollipops are the seven pinwheel-looking decorations popping out of the scoreboard. Ever since I was two and had been going to sox games, the lollipops always entertain me more than the actual baseball.
Batter Up A baseball player touching the bill of a baseball cap and a mother’s nervous laugh at the ballpark tell more about human nature than at first glance. For one hour, I observed a baseball game for high school baseball teams with scouts monitoring every move of the players. Typically, when I think of watching a baseball game, I think of watching an exciting game and cheering on the team; however, I witnessed a completely different atmosphere while taking a closer look. I could have cut the tension with a knife as I witnessed each player trying to gain the attention of the scouts.
We waited outside of Wrigley Field for more than two hours because outside of Wrigley Field were filled with people. Once we got inside Wrigley Field we looked everywhere and we could see a lot of banter flying inside the stadium. It was a historic feeling to see all these people holding banters inside the Wrigley Field stadium. When we got down to our seats, I made sure to take my time observing the entire stadium and the famous presidential box. Ice cream and Giordano’s pizza vendors were all over the field, and we started screaming to make sure we were enjoying the day. And for me it’s no secret that Chicago Cubs stadium has one of the best sports atmospheres in the country. As soon as the game ended people poured champagne all over one another at the same time, some people enjoyed it and some didn’t. We could see some people crying and my cousin and I had to go talk to them to calm them down. At the end of the trophy celebration it was hard to get out of the Wrigley Field because there were thousands of fans at the
Since I was a little girl my dream was to always play the highest level of softball as possible. I wanted to be the best pitcher there ever was. The first position I ever learned to play was also the one that almost ended my softball career. Starting out in little league the pitcher is required to wear a batting helmet while playing the pitching position. This is for ages normally 5 and under, at this age the girls are still using pitching machines or coach pitch. As the older the girls get the rules change, no face mask or helmet has to be worn while pitching. As for me I hated wearing face mask, I always had an excuse to not wear it. Who would've thought that it would one day save my life.
My place of observation was the USM baseball field, known as Towers Field on the Gorham campus where the USM baseball team was taking on Wheaton college at 1pm on Sunday, April 17, 2016. The field can be found behind Philippi Hall at the far end of campus near the softball field and turf field where many other sports are played. The space consists of two dugouts, one field, a press box and a bunch of spectator seating. There’s a patch of grass dividing the baseball and softball fields where many people stand, watch the game and sometimes barbecue. The press box sits at the front, facing the field up behind home plate and the spectator seating is in front of home plate and spans around to the dugouts. The home team can be found on the
It had been an unbelievable season so far, we were going into the championship game of junior league with only two losses. Of course, the only other team with a better record than us was the black team. We gave them their only loss on the second game of the regular season. Now, after defeating the better of the Mosinee teams in the semi finals, my dad, who was also the coach of our blue team, had stopped to watch the rest of the game between black and red.
