Both the American and French Revolutions were inspired by the Enlightenment and the ideas of liberty, personal freedom, personal growth, and the ability to improve society. The French were actually inspired by the American Revolution and the ability of a large group of people to create a system of government without a monarchy. The American and French Revolutions began as a disagreement over taxation. Both increases of taxation were due to France’s and Britain’s involvement in the Seven Years’ War. The British and French economies were suffering financially as a result of their series of battles in the war, and therefore looked to increase taxes.
