In Mary Shelley’s book “Frankenstein: of The Modern Prometheus” there are two main characters who represent the differences between light and dark, good and evil, learned knowledge and acquired knowledge.

The book “Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus” is said to be a lengthy gothic science fiction novel that “came to the author in the form of a nightmare after accepting a challenge from Lord Byron to write a ghost story. (1)” In the beginning the story starts by a letter to Mrs. Saville in England written by her brother Robert Walton. Early in his life his mother knew that Elizabeth, someone they pretty much would be taking into their family was destined to become Frankenstein 's future wife. Elizabeth became his playmate, his best friend, his confidante. He adores her and neither of them find any reason to be against what has become their destiny, to be together. When he was younger he began reading the works of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and considers himself a disciple of Paracelsus and Albertus Magnus. His father warns that he is wasting his time focusing on these types of studies when most of them have been pretty much blown out of proportion. He is saddened at the fact that he is unable to share his excitement about his findings with his father but sharing them with his love, Elizabeth, will suffice. After a while these Chemists and Alchemists that he reads about all begin to discredit themselves so he begins to lag in the area of interest.
In Volume One, Chapter One the readers are to learn where his drive comes from. The text states “When I was about fifteen years old, we had retired to our house near Belrive, when we witnessed a most violent and terrible thunderstorm. It advanced from behind the mountains of Jura’ and the thunder burst at once with frightful loudness from various quarters of the heavens.
