Beside all of the elements above, poetry also has the other aspect. It is poetic devices. Like the other art has, poetry also has devices. These devices are used by the poet to create rhythm, improve the meaning of the poem, and build up the feeling and mood. There are some major devices that commonly used in the poems. First things first are alliteration. It is sound of consonant words that repeated at the beginning of the poem. For example in the poem of Thomas Hardy titled Channel Firing. In the first and fourth stanzas, the words “great guns” and “striving strong” are the alliteration. Next is repetition. Repetition is part of the literary devices that repeated the words in poem few times. Repetition contains many types, however only two …show more content…
Inversion also known as anastrophe is when the order of the words is reversed in order to get some particular effect of emphasis. Some techniques are required to achieve it. Those techniques are the place of adjective after noun, the place of verb before the subject, the place of noun before its preposition. Then the next one is the figures of speech. It is means the words or phrase that having different meanings than the literal meaning. There are also some types of figures of speech, nevertheless only few of the types that commonly used in poetry. The first on is simile. It is a figure of speech that makes the comparison and similarity between two different things. Usually, simile used the words “like” or “as”. For example is the poem by Thomas Hardy titled Channel Firing. In the last stanza, it can be seen that the speaker compare far inland with Stourton Tower. Second one is metaphor. Metaphor is types of figures of speech that have implicit words or hidden comparison between the two things. Unlike simile that use words “as” and “like”, metaphor did not use it. The example can be seen in Richard Cory by E.A. Robinson. In the final stanzas, the words “without the meat” and “cursed the bread” are a metaphor. Literally, both of the words are not make any sense. Metaphorically, the words without the meat means the town people doing without any better things in their life and cursed the bread means their hatred for being
The most prominent of these poetic devices is repetition. In this specific poem, repetition helps establish the tone of the poem. The repetition of the phrase, “Never shall I forget…” helps to drive home the point that these memories were so horrific that Elie will never forget them. It provides evidence as to the tone of the poem by conjuring a feeling of desperation. Another poetic device used in this poem is imagery.
The most obvious poetic devise of this poem is the rhyming scheme. Rhyming is when there is close similarity in the final sounds of two or more words or lines of writin.
Another technique this poem takes use of is alliteration. The alliteration used helps to express the themes importance through repletion of sound devices. A specific example of alliteration
To create a good suspenseful fiction short story, or novel, the author uses literary devices. A literary device is something that an author does to make a story better. In this case more suspenseful. One of the literary devices, Edgar Allen Poe used in, “Annabel Lee was a rhyme.” An example of rhyme was on stanza 34. The example is, “For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams,” (Edgar Allen Poe, 2017). This is an example of rhyme because it repeats the same sounds in the quote of, moon never beams, without dreams. Beams and dreams have the similar sound, meaning that the rhyme.
The way that the poem rhymes affect the way it sound buy giving it a certain beat and
Poets use comparisons frequently to help them discuss two or more things. Poets can use similes or metaphors to make these comparisons. A simile is a comparison that uses the words “like” or “as.” When Robert Frost says “life is too much like a pathless wood,” then he is using a simile.
‘Gas! GAS!’ is a good example of repetition. The repetition of the word gas, gives emphasis to the word, making that word very powerful. The second time round of saying gas is in capitals as if someone is shouting the word at them and making sure that everyone has heard the alert, to minimise the risk of deaths of soldiers. This word would now be drummed into the readers head so that they are constantly thinking about it throughout the rest of the poem.
In poetry, there is often the use of many words that may seem a bit strange to the average reader. These words are often more complex than what is actually meant, but are used to enhance the reading and make it more enjoyable to the reader. Other words would make the poem less smooth, and that is why such complexity arises. These words shape a type of metaphor, which is referred to as a kenning.
The poem has no rhyme scheme or particular rhythm; this makes the descriptions stick out more to the reader, while having a varied sound when it is written
In Emily Dickinson's poem, the most important poetic device is her unique word choice. All of the other poetic devices discussed so far have a direct
“love’s long” (line7) and “grieve at grievances” in (line 9) , “woe to woe tell o’er”
For example, end rhymes in the poem alternate lines with very few variations, implementing frequently repeated, and alarmingly simplistic rhyming words such as: "Lee," "sea," "me," and "we."
At least one or two of the following devices of sound: assonance, consonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and other echoic words.
If one is aiming to write a poem it is useful to know by detail the basic elements of poetry to understand and control better what and how to say things, they are: voice, stanza, sound patterns, figures of speech and the poetic forms.
Poetry is a varied art form. Poetry is expression with words, using aesthetics and definition. Word choice in poetry is the single most important thing. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm work in a poem to convey a certain image or to facilitate understanding. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.
