Discrimination Among African American Women

How does one correct centuries of discrimination without alienating the majority, who have benefitted from the mistreatment of minorities as citizens of this country? Before understanding how affirmative action has an effect on U.S. history, one must comprehend what it is and what the motive was behind it. There is a vast number of ways that one might experience power. Challenges such as race may affect individuals in very different ways, by geographic or socioeconomic status. Patricia Hill Collins main focus was applied to African-American women, but she gave insight on how domination and identity politics need continuous change in the world. But change cannot be focused on one group, it must focus on all groups for social movements to be successful.

For years, African American Women have suffered from psychological and physical oppression. During Enslavement, Black women were treated worse than men. They had no control over their bodies and were used as tools for the white slave owners’ enjoyment. Submission was expected, and therefore any form of resistance would have led to a series of whippings. Unfortunately, the abuse was not only received from the slave masters, but from the mistresses as well. Filled with envy, they would verbally and physically attack the female slaves and made it their goal to break them down mentally. African Americans face discrimination in the workforce everyday regarding compensation, opportunities, etc. Women face discrimination in the workforce as well like, unequal compensation to male counterparts, lack of opportunities, and an inadequate amount of time for maternity leave. African American women face discrimination from both gender and race inequality. Since black females face discrimination because of their race and gender, they face greater discrimination and wage inequality than white females and black males. Greeting, I did learn many things while reading chapter 2. However, the most interesting thing I found was the concept that expressing about race and gender oppression simultaneously. On page 51, based on the 1996 welfare reforms "welfare queen" deserve state assistance due to race and gender idea. However, the word "welfare queen" stereotypical represent black woman. Does any one knows white receives more state assistance than non-white. Indeed, based on U.S Department of Agriculture data white are more state assistance recipients than non-white.

Racism is as old as history that’s because it was known in history everyone was divided by race. This division had caused trouble because of how they treated each other or how the powerful treated the others. There are plenty of examples of this, but only one of them stands out in my book .The biggest most memorable discrimination is the one between the Americans and the African Americans. The African Americans were placed in the lower and below class by the Americans. Their relationship if there was any was known as master and slave, owner and property, and exterminator and vermin. Basically, life for them was the hard knock more like the eternity in hell.

Discrimination lingers under the diversity of the United States. Minorities across the country are targeted and eventually fight for their respect or learn to ignore the harassment. These struggles have caused beautiful revolts and renaissances throughout history. What are a few examples of these cases?

Equal is something that has been fought for over many years. This generation has over came many challenging moments and situations that African Americans have been through, but today is concern is that the equal rights that our grandparents and ancestors fought for is still challenged today. Rasism and discrimination against people of color has always happened, from slavery, to segregation and now to the colored race still being killed for their rights. A few deaths have recently been showed through the media such as Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Eric Garner and have been proven to have similarties to past cases such as Emmett Till; this is scary for our country because it was made seem as if we had overcame discrimination, but in relity its still here.

For centuries it has seemed that African Americans have been fighting a never ending battle for acceptance in society. Although this is somewhat true, it appears that the rest of minorities being discriminated against are left in the shadows. I understand African American citizens might have an immense population of people that are being discriminated by the authorities, but people need to also understand and realize that it is not only African Americans. Instead of the recently popular quote being “Black lives matter”, it should instead be, “All lives matter”. The African Americans had to deal with discrimination as well as the Mexican Americans. When getting through the rough times they had to come up with something that made people rethink the African Americans are not bad that they are harmless. The African Americans came up with the double victory plan, there not bad but people look at them like there a animal. People feel the need to tell them that they are not equal and they have no right to live. This is why they came up with the double victory plan, to show that they are fighting for the same thing.

All throughout history, women are generally known as the caregivers of the family who always look after their children. Back in the early 1900s, women of black descent in the rural areas of South Africa were the ones in charge of the household with the absence of their men due to their movement to cities as migrant laborers to work in mines and domestic work.

There is no hierarchy of needs but sex discrimination would not be prioritized by Black women because of the silence of the women’s right movement on the issue of race . hooks (2002) argued that the understanding central to modern feminist thinking is that all women are oppressed which implies that all women are oppressed to the same degree, within the sole do-main of their gender. This understanding assumes that all women have common shared experi-ence to oppression based on social spheres such as race, class, sexual orientation and as a result it fails to conceive the disparate levels to which sexism is a part of institutionalized systems of domination that does not solely determine the fate or experiences of all women. Is there a such thing as a black male/female or is that just an abstraction created by the world? No one on the face of the planet was born saying they were black , it had to have been taught. Anyone calling a person black has been brainwashed to give that label and whatever they label their self. They are all just labels that no one asked for. Labels are instilled from day one, and they begin to marinate and sink in until they are accepted. “It is sad because the thing that least defines us as people in the color of our skin.”
