In life, racism and discrimination have played a part in many people's lives. Even though there has been countless attempts to try to fix the problem, people were and still are affected by it. This theme of racism and discrimination can be found in plenty of works of literature, where the authors uses this one theme to develop their story. Some types are in fictional stories like Of Mice and Men, memoirs like “Night” and plays like “Fences”.
Racism and discrimination are seen throughout many fictional stories. An example can be found in the novelette, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, where the protagonist, Lennie is discriminated by society. Lennie is a mentally disabled man who has the mind of a child. In these types of reading selections the character all have lost something was valuable. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie lost his life in the end. Also, in “Night”, the Jewish people lost everything. They lost their families, friends and all their possessions. Lastly, in “Fences”, troy died because of a heart attack, The three genres: fictional stories, memoirs and plays all carried the same thing. They showed the theme of racism and discrimination and share many things in common; many people were discriminated, treated unfairly and somebody lost a life. Also, the theme of racism and discrimination is developed differently throughout the three different genres as well. It is developed differently because each of them were taken place in different time periods. In Of Mice and Men, the setting took place during the time of The Great Depression. In “Night” the setting took place during the Holocaust and in the play “Fences”, the setting took place during the Civil Rights Movement. These different types of genre show the theme of racism and discrimination but is all taken place during a different time period, which makes them different from each
