Have you ever been bullied in the workplace, or been discriminated because of your race, gender, age, or sexual orientation? Discrimination in general has been an issue in this country for centuries. Title VII is a law that prevents employers to discriminate others based on their race, religion, sex, and nationality. (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2017). America has a law that prevents discrimination in the work place, yet we still have discrimination in the workplace. It has gotten to the point where companies, businesses, and business owners need to act and protect those who are being discriminated at work. The workplace needs to address the issue of discrimination and make changes on their policies about discriminating others based on their race because it can have a negative effect on the victims.

Discrimination can easily be defined as the practice of unfair or unequal treatment of an individual or group based on certain characteristics. These characteristics can include: age, disability, ethnicity, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, and sexual orientation. Discrimination can take on many forms and can be used at any time and people won’t even notice they are being discriminated against. Examples of discrimination can be either be bias of promotion, job assignment, retaliation, job hiring and various types of harassment.

Charges of workplace discrimination is said to be at an all time high. During the 2015 fiscal year the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity released information that claims there were more than 89,000 charges filed for workplace discrimination. One of the top ten charges is said to be retaliation, which had an estimate 39,757 cases in 2015, which is 44.5 percent of all charges filed. Retaliation is said to be in violation of the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, For the purpose of this research paper I will provide the understanding of both Acts, while also taking a case that deals with to provide the basis of the case, the findings, and the outcome of the charges.

Abstract- Racial discrimination happens all the time and most of us are unaware of it. The most common place for this to happen is in the workplace. Now people can be discriminated against because of their race, religion, or any other numerous things. Also, discrimination can occur during the job interview or even after you got the job. This paper will shoe the effects of racial discrimination and how it can be prevented.
