There is no denying that the U.S. women’s soccer team was discriminated. From our secondary research, it was noted that the pay disparity between women players and men players is unjustified (Futterman, 2016). We observed that the U.S. Women’s National Team has achieved a lot in comparison to their male counterparts in international tournaments in the recent past (Das, 2016). In addition, the women’s soccer team draws in a greater following than the U.S. Men’s National Team. Subsequently, there is no justification for the inequality salary to the U.S. women soccer players. We found it intriguing that despite the fact that they bring a lot of revenue to the country, it still occurred. Cases like this have been common across the world, and the
This incredible publicity is expected to cause an explosion of female interest in soccer, already the most popular sport among college-age females, according to a recent study by the National College Athletic Association. Members of the U.S. women's soccer team say they are relying on future generations to keep their team supplied with talent. To take advantage of its time in the spotlight, the team launched a twelve-city tour against a team of world all-stars in the months following its win. They wanted to demonstrate to the USSF (United States Soccer Federation) that a woman's professional league would attract crowds and be financially viable. Players say a league is needed to maintain the growth of women's soccer.
Professional athletes in the United States are given extremely substantial contracts and lucrative endorsement deals and it has been argued that their salaries should be reduced to smaller wages but others say they are paid accordingly. The argument that athletes are overpaid not only exists in the United States but also all over the world. Most countries however do not have the variety of major sports that the U.S. has. When athletes are being paid millions of dollars each year, it raises an important discussion. This discussion is about how we value and compensate athletes and whether or not their salary is too much. This also leads to an argument asking if American priorities are altered by the significant difference of athletes
People all over America and the world are consumed with watching athletes perform in their various sports. Both male and female athletes compete at such incredible levels that require physical talent and drive. Professional athletes are known to get paid salaries that reflect their talent and abilities. Regardless of gender, professional athletes are drafted to receive professional pay. However, equal pay for male and female athletes with the same credentials does not occur today. There is a belief that male athletes are worth more than female athletes and are better at promoting themselves. Also, women salaries are lower because of their gender and are not
Lopiano complains that there’s too much of a salaries gap between man and women playing the same sports. “The right to play has been established. However, the issue that has been confronted is the barrier to being treated equally when it comes to money” (Lopiano 1). Most people will say women’s tennis matches are more exciting than men’s matches; men’s victory purses are still considerably higher than women’s victory purses. Top women tennis players earned 59 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. The average total purse was $63,031,000.00 for top men players and $41,000,000.00 for top women players (Daniel Frankl 2). In soccer, the Women’s World Cup soccer team was promised $12,500 if they won compared to the $300,000 male players were to receive. The payout for women players was increased to $50,000 because fans protested the unfair payout gap between the male and female players (Lopiano 1); it’s still 1/6 the payout

A large portion of society enjoys watching U.S. soccer on television. One way woman’s soccer suffers inequality is in Juliet Gan’s article, “USWNT Files Lawsuits against U.S. Soccer in Fight for Equal Pay” she challenges how woman are getting unequal pay in soccer compared to men. Woman soccer players need equal pay and equal treatment.
Women’s professional soccer players should receive equal pay to men’s professional soccer players. Right now, women’s soccer players earn much less than their male counterparts, both from their official salaries as well as corporate sponsorships (Palmer, 2015). This is still true even after just under 23 million Americans watched the U.S. Women’s National Team’s victory in 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final against Japan, setting a record for the most watched soccer game in U.S. history (Palmer, 2015). While the U.S. Women’s National Team, who have played in numerous FIFA Women’s World Cups, have subsidized salaries, and some high-profile players have endorsements deals, their salaries are low for professional athletes, which is a serious deterrent to players starting, and staying, in the game (Johnson,
Football is the most viewed sport all over the globe. These men are among the most well-paid athletes on the planet. The United States football is very popular but however the women’s national football team is very livid. The women get paid one-fourth of what the men get paid. It's the same sport but just different wages. I happen to agree with the women in this situation. The women’s national team has achieved more than the men’s national team in just this past 20 years. The women's national team have won many major trophies that the United States have never even gotten close to getting. The girls won two WORLD CUPS in a row. It's not fair for the women to be winning more than the men and get paid so much less than the men. The deal the women
The United States Women’s National Soccer Team has decided to file a complaint against the United States Federation. The women’s team is demanding that they are to be paid equally for working just as rigorously and performing better than the men’s soccer team. The men’s team only reached the sixteenth round of the World Cup in 2014 and received $9 million while the women’s team won the World’s Cup and given only $2 million to be distributed among the team. This isn’t the only instance where the team has felt they have been treated unfairly compared to the men’s team. Last December team was supposed to play on dangerous fields that were covered with rocks. The complaint is backed by the entire team but was officially filed by Carli Llyod, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauebrunn and Hope Solo. In an interview on the Today’s Show, Morgan stated “Every single day we sacrifice just as much as the men. We work just as much. We endure just as much physically and emotionally.” Morgan also mentions that all the team desires is for the federation and their employer to appreciate them (Juliet Spies-Gans,
The U.S Soccer Federation is being brought to attention and being investigated of the discrimination towards the women. For example, “The U.S Soccer Federation is a 501 nonprofit and the official governing body of the sport of soccer in the United States.”(Wikipedia1). This clearly demonstrates that the federation is in charge of the soccer, and it is understood that they are more than capable of changing the discrimination between the women and the men. The significance is that being the federation they have all of the power to determine how much pay each national team gets, and only they can do what’s right in this situation. In addition, “According to a budget report from the U.S Soccer Federation, the women’s team is projected to bring in more than $17 million in revenues, including a $5 million surplus for a fiscal year 2017, nearly doubling their male counterparts.”(Santhanam1). This quote can help the women out by fighting with the federation on these statistics, showing
In today’s society, the idea of becoming an athletic professional is a great deal. A professional athlete competes individually or as a part of a team in a variety of sporting events. In the field of professional athletics, the topic of how much men and women get paid seems to be an ongoing concept. This leads to an unrestricted question, do professional male and female athletes receive the same yearly salary? Some people may argue that men get paid more than women athletes, while others may think that women get paid more than men of the same athletic profession. This question would be a suitable research question to consider because it is a topic of curiosity around the world which may reveal a segment of gender inequality.
“The USA women’s national team are demanding equal pay. Is it realistic?” by Beau Dure, is an informative article written with the purpose to tell the reader the facts in the debate over equal pay between men’s and women’s soccer. Dure emphasizes the pay gap and supports the claim of there being one with several sub-claims. He does not simply say that there is a gap, he tells
In 2015, the Women’s National Soccer Team won the World Cup. In 2016, the Women’s National Soccer Team made it to the Olympics. The New York Times showed that in the past four years, the Women’s National Soccer Team had 88 wins while the men had 44. Despite their advance in victories, the women are still getting paid much less that the men. Would you want to be paid less than someone else that is doing less work than you? In the National Soccer league, women should be paid at least the equal amount as men do because the NWSL has more hard working and determined players than the men.
What is equality? Equality is the state of being equal in rights, opportunities, and status. Equality is what every single person deserves; men and women should be treated equivalently. Equality isn’t just something we yearn for, it’s something that is essential and necessary. The U.S. women’s soccer team is being treated unfairly, thus creating an injustice. It shouldn’t matter what race, what religion, what gender you are because soccer is universal, respect should be too. They play the same game, it’s time they get paid the same. We all have a love and respect for the beautiful game, it’s time we have that for each other. The U.S. women’s soccer team should be paid the same as the U.S. men’s soccer team because we are equal.
Elana is currently ranked number one in the nation in her free throw percentage but not just for women but for males also. “Elana has a higher free throw than most professional NBA players, but yet she still only earns ¼ of what males in this nation get paid for playing the same sport” (sports reference LLC.). This is unfair as she puts in the same amount of work as males and still doesn’t receive the treatment she deserves. Another example of this poor treatment is seen in the USA women’s soccer team. Five members of the U.S. women 's national soccer team including; “Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan have filed a wage-discrimination action against the U.S. Soccer Federation with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The filing, citing figures from the USSF 's 2015 financial report, says that despite the women 's team generating nearly $20 million more revenue last year than the U.S. men 's team, the women are paid about a
