Our lives are shaped by who we are, what we are, and where we come from. The different opportunities and life chances do matter in U.S. society in many ways. Research shows that someone's race, ethnicity, gender, social class, immigrant status, and sexual orientation, and other dimensions of identity, shape our life prospects from birth until death. Many aspects of yourself matter more than many of us want to acknowledge, because doing so means admitting that life isn’t actually an equal, and that the American dream is more easily fulfilled for some people than others. Ethnic minorities are often disadvantaged through being discriminated against at work, when looking for accommodation, health services and through various levels of law and order.
America is greatly influenced and enhanced by the many versatile cultures which inhabit it. Cultural diversity has added to our economy in such a way that it brings innovated ideas and contact structures throughout the world. International cuisines have come to America through subcultures, have expanded the food industry, and have allowed English Americans to try new foods and flavors. Immigrants have brought with them religious values that greatly differ and vary from those at which were natural in the main stream American culture. Throughout most of history, women have endured so much. They almost always had fewer legal rights and career opportunities. The main professions tied to women were wifehood and motherhood. According to "Women's History in America" (1995), “Women were long considered naturally weaker than men, squeamish, and unable to perform work requiring muscular or intellectual development.” The common stereotype was “a woman’s place is in the home.” Women went through the struggles of not being able to get an education, voice their opinions, not having the right to vote, and being viewed as property.
Diversity has been observed in different parts of the world especially the Unites States. Seemingly the country harbors different variations of people. The people are living in the US vary in terms of their cultures, norms, beliefs, behaviors and religions. Such variations make them lead unique lives from one another. In my intro to social work class, I was able to learn more about the Diversity Certificate Program. When my advisor first told me about the program, I did not know if I wanted to do it depending on how busy my schedule was. But, after I heard more about the benefits and opportunities that I would obtain from this program, I decided that it would be a great opportunity and I wanted to be a part of it! Plus the program is flexible so I can be able to incorporate it in my schedule so I can graduate on time.

Over the past few years a great deal of controversy has emerged in relation to the question about the legacy of American diversity. Historically, America has stood out as one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. Today, mistreating and giving less favorable opportunities to an individual who is powerless as a minority in society, and belonging to a specific ethnic group, has become the order of the day. For example, since 9/11, Muslims in the United States have experienced increasing discrimination in the workplace and large segments of the Muslim community have faced isolation from fellow American citizens because of differences of faith.
Immigrants have been flooding America for hundreds of years. People that have immigrated look different, act different, and talk different. With all the racial diversity in american culture, we are prone to racial tensions, so we should try to put ourselves in the shoes of people who are different to see their point of view.
The United States is a nation full of immense ethnic and racial diversity. Ever since its formation, social injustices have contradicted the values that its Constitution upholds. Anyone who studies U.S. history will soon find that the rights of many groups of people were not won without extreme struggle. Organizations who make a commitment to diversity can see a significant impact on business in many ways. Diversity “requires a significant commitment for change to occur” (Delong, 2007, p.9). It is extremely important that leaders understand the commitment and embrace it in order for a positive impact to occur. Employers with diverse cultures and leaders can build positive and successful relationships with customers, suppliers and vendors. They can better attract and retain top talent. All of these equal more financial gain for the company.
In the United States, we are going through a tough transition period. We are moving on from old energy to new energy and from conservative traditions to new ones. It is good to know that many in the country acknowledge the times with a belief of an inclusive America. In the same fashion, some celebrities speak out about racial issues that continue to divide out country as they fight for equality for all races. Our country is there yet, but individuals with huge platforms who use it to speak in favor of diversity, it can help our country get to that point. An influential figure can convince countless people to become more accepting of the changing country that becomes better for all Americans.
Coming from a small town community where there is only a single stoplight and everyone personally knows each other, diversity is not something that is experienced every day. Every year since kindergarten I have been going to school with the same group of friends who share the same socio-economic status as me and the only real diversity that the school has to offer is the one or two foreign exchange students that it is able to bring in for that year. Simply being put diversity is not present in everyday life for most of my classmates.

The recent unrest in Ferguson Missouri has brought a number of controversial issues into the national spotlight. One day after a police shot and killed an unarmed black teenager, civil protests erupted, curfews were established and militarized riot squads secured the streets to maintain order.
