“Sweetie? Where are you going?” I heard my mother’s faint voice call out from the kitchen. I was standing at the front door, halfway through opening it when I heard her voice. It was Oli’s, my best friend’s, birthday and her, Angelo, and Dante, were going to Las Vegas to spend her special weekend. Although I’ve told and reminded my mom of me leaving over ten times, she is incredibly forgetful. “Mom, I’ve already told you. I’m going out for the weekend,” I responded, yelling but my voice monotone. “Okay, sweetie, I’ll probably be here when you get home.” “Okay, mom. Love you,” I quietly responded, already out of the door and heading to my car.
My mother never liked any of the friends that I’ve ever made. She always said that they were “bad influences.” She especially doesn’t like Oli. What kind of a name is “Oli”? We’re an hour into California when I hear Dante yell out,“Oh, my god!” causing me to slam on the breaks in the middle of the road. “Dante, what the heck?!” I raise my voice and turn around in the seat to face Dante who is sitting in the back and on the right. “I died,” he replies sheepishly,”Sorry.” “Oh my god, Dante, you scared me. Could have gotten into a car crash, but thank god nobody’s here.” My response makes everybody look around at the openly deserted road. It’s just like what you would see out of any horror movie. No cars, no signs, trees -- almost making up a forest, but not quite -- surrounding every part of it. I can tell that, like I am, they’re all slightly freaked out about it. “Hey, Cade, could you start up the car and drive again? I’m kind of starting to get freaked out,” Oli says in a panic. “Yeah, C, I think that we’re all kind of freaked out,” Dante agrees with
