It kills more people than car accidents every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classified it as an epidemic and the World Health Organization reported it threatened the achievements of modern medicine. Prescription drug abuse is a global problem, and the U.S. is the world’s biggest addict. With this being a continuous growing problem several American cities have filed separate lawsuits that claim pharmaceutical companies are liable for their communities’ rampant drug addiction problems. Many believe the drug companies that create and sell these drugs need to be held accountable for this dangerous trend, especially since several have been caught lying about the benefits and risks of their drugs. The federal government has not charged Purdue with any crimes connected to reporting of OxyContin sales. Legal experts said that if the city of Everett prevails in civil court, the floodgates could open for other litigation. Purdue has been sued hundreds of times over the past 20 years over its marketing of OxyContin to doctors and the drug’s risk of addiction to patients, but Everett’s suit is the first to focus narrowly on what the company knew about criminal distribution of the painkiller. With this being an ongoing problem many people aren 't going to give up. Another situation that occurred during this lawsuit was, the lawsuit claims Purdue never notified the Drug Enforcement Administration of the suspected division, which it is required by law. Within the law there is three levels of law enforcement agencies. Those three law enforcement agencies would be local, state, and federal.
