Dunstan's Redemption In 'The Kite Runner'

Redemption demands loss of characters existence. The snowball incident affected Dunstan physical and mental relationships to others. As he states, “your one human responsibility is a madwoman about whom you cherish a maggoty-headed delusion; and here you are, puzzling over records of lives as strange as fairy tales, written by people with no sense of history, and yet you cannot rid yourself of the notion that you are well occupied” (Davies, 168). Dunstan is fully in adulthood and has not established a healthy relationship with anyone, even with his self. Dunstan becomes ostracized due to his guilt and association with the Dempster's, which drives him to take solace within his mind, further his isolation. The pomegranate tree symbolizes both Amir and Hassan friendship. After the rape incident, that Amir had witnessed, Amir hits Hassan with a pomegranate, indicating that he is throwing his guilt. Amir can’t stand the guilt, so he takes the guilt over the pomegranate. Amir wanted Hassan to throw pomegranates at him since the guilt is overwhelming him. Instead, Hassan throws the pomegranates on his head. Further in the novel, in Pakistan, Amir learns in redeeming himself and Baba’s sins while talking with Rahim Khan. Rahim Khan then summons Amir in talking about Baba’s past deeds; how Baba tries redeeming himself by building an orphanage and helping the poor. Amir thinks about his life back in America, how he is a prolific author, writing stories and novels. Amir realizes that Hassan may have saved from being raped by Assef if his father has told him that they were related. Hurled around during the fight with Assef, Amir redeems himself of getting the punishment he feels he deserves. “I felt at peace… I hadn’t been happy and I hadn’t felt better...but I did now...my body was broken...but I feel healed. Healed at last.” (The Kite Runner. 303). Amir felt that he’s paying back all the times he was unkind towards Hassan. Thus, redemption demands the loss of Dunstan and Amir
