Being a native to Hawaii was a helpful push towards legendary status for Eddie Aikau. The act of riding waves with a wooden type board originated in Western Polynesia over three thousand years ago (The Origins of Surfing). The first Polynesian settlers to land in Hawaii were said to be skilled in simple surfing, and after a few hundred years of riding waves in Hawaii, the well-known Hawaiian form of the sport emerged (The Origins of Surfing). Eddie Aikau propelled in surfing because of his love for the ocean, his job as a lifeguard, and his first surfing competitions.
Eddie Aikau’s love for the ocean shined through on a surfboard. Most people enjoy the ocean in the summer months when the ocean is placid and family-friendly but Eddie loved the ocean all year around. (Pasulka). When it came to surfing, it was never a competition for Eddie. Surfing for Eddie was a connection to the ocean and the ancestral roots that were found within each wave he rode (Rolland). Surfing was symbolized as being one of the last traditional arts that the Hawaiian people practiced, and when Eddie surfed, it was a revival for his people every time he was in the water (Rolland). Eddie was such a skilled waterman that he was hired as the first lifeguard ever to work on the North Shore. This job only improved his surfing skills because during his breaks and lunches, Eddie would surf. He became more skillful and daring by having this kind of access to big waves every day (Dubiel). Eddie never even had a high school diploma, but because he was such an extraordinary surfer he was awarded the position (Dubiel). There was never a loss of life while Eddie was on duty and he went on to save over find hundred lives in the course of his career there (Dubiel). Eddie was honored by his fellow lifeguards in 1971 and was named “Lifeguard of the Year”

Eddie was born in Washington D.C, the son of two immigrants, making him a second generation immigrant. This effects his self-identity because he is different. He grew up in a different culture than most kids. This came apparent to him early on. Eddie’s food at lunch was different than the “average” lunch. He had food that was traditional to his culture, but it did not smell good. The other kids made fun of Eddie, “It was embarrassing, so I asked Mom to start packing me some white people food.” He was aware that he came from a different background than most kids, and that is was because of his parents being first generation immigrants, making him second.

On March 2, 2016 22 year old, Mark Hutchinson went surfing by the north shore of Oahu. Oahu has the most deadliest waves. The waves annihilate most of the surfers that try to ride the waves. The waves are copious and have large amounts. The waves are also omnipresent. Mark Hutchinson asked a few of his surfing buddies to come with, but they all made artless lies. So, Mark obviously knew they were lying, but he did not argue. He just took a plane to the northern shore of Oahu and tried to take on the most omnipotent waves in the world. Mark thought he could surf the waves, because surfing was facile for him.
We learn that Eddie dies saving a little girl from a falling cart at the amusement park that he works at, and he instantly runs to push her out of the way when he realizes she is in danger. This is a very noble and selfless act made by Eddie. A quote from the novel from page 18 that pertains to this scene reads, “He dropped his cane and pushed off his bad leg and felt a shock of pain that almost knocked him down... The idea of survival is conveyed through character development in “The Five People You Meet In Heaven.” Survival is shown during the war, as Eddie has to go through fight after fight. According to the book, “The Five People You Meet In Heaven,” it states, “He learned the nervous cheer of a soldier’s first survived combat, when the men slap each other and smile as if it’s over - We can go home now! - and he learned the sinking depression of a soldier’s combat, when he realizes the fighting does not stop at one battle, there is more and more after that...” This shows that Eddie has to continue to endure all the battles, although he wants to go home. Since the war isn’t over, Eddie has to continue fighting in the war, and he has to continue to go through different problems of the war. At the beginning,, the author introduced Eddie as a lonesome hero on his 83rd birthday as the maintenance man at an amusement park called Ruby Pier and that he tests the amusement rides to ensure the safety of the visitors especially the children. At 83, he is the master of his domain (Ruby Pier) and hardened against the injustices of the world. Eddie died from a falling roller coaster cart in trying to save a little girl and his journeys to Heaven where the rest of the story takes place. In the moment before his death, Eddie did not realize the value of his life. This is why he is so eager to find out whether or not the young girl he tried to save at the park survived. A young boy, Nicky visited the pier a few months back and
