His work sparked the creativity of thousands of people while he was alive and millions after his death in October of 1849. Mr. Poe wrote at least 50 publicized pieces with an unknown amount that have never been published. He was the person who sparked my love of reading in elementary school and his stories are still read by millions of people today. Without him American literature would not have progressed in the direction that it has till now. Edgar Allan Poe was the man who started my love of reading years ago with his poem, Nevermore. I remember reading it for the first time and finding it interesting and looking up Edgars other works. I read through all his works that were in the school’s library such as, “Nevermore”, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” He led me to getting my first library card just so I could read more of his work. To me at that time he was the greatest writer in the world, and to this day he still resides at the top of that list in my mind.
