One of the most influential authors of all time, Edgar Allan Poe, uses dark imagery and complex syntax to make his short stories and poems dark and mysterious. Poe’s dark, tragic backstory contributes to his dark writing style. His father left him when he was young, and his mother died when he was only three. He then went on writing poems, and after he finished his school, he found his fiance cheating on him, so he moved to Boston to get away from everything he knew. He then married his cousin when she was only 13, but she died 11 years after. Annabel Lee was likely based off of his wife's death, having wrote it shortly after her death. Overall, Poe used his dark imagery and complex syntax to write his gothic short stories and poems such as Annabel Lee and Fall of the House of Usher.

Poe ,truly, had a very inspired and original form of writing. His works tended to be on the darker side, but they appealed to people’s human nature. The new style provoked curiosity and sparked intrigue in many poets of the day. Poe was a Dark Romantic which means that while he agreed with the supernatural elements, focus on nature, and strict poetic structure of Romanticism, he did not share the Idealistic view of humans that many of the other Romantic authors of his time stressed. His emotions never failed to show through his writings, which helped the story line touch the readers. Poe became very close to several different women but each would die shortly after he came to love them. This only pushed him to write more emotionally. Poe had a natural talent for putting his real life experiences into a fictional story and making it seem as if it were really happening.

This is due to his amazing imagery skills. When Poe wrote “Lenore” over and over in his poem “the raven” he was expressing how his loved one Lenore died and he's hallucinating about her. Also from the poem “the tell-tale heart” he describes how the murderer planned to kill an innocent old man and how he “took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings.” He thinks of so many crazy things about death. When people read the tell tale heart they see what Poe says.

Out of all of Poe’s works, at least ninety percent of them are dark or have a depressing meaning. I do believe that he wrote those dark stories because of his depressing life. The three most important women in his life died from tuberculosis. His mother when he was two, his foster mother when he was twenty, and sadly, his wife when he was thirty-eight. Poe’s early life was full of hardships, anyone he got close to seemed to die or disappear. Events like these could emotionally scar anyone and you can see that it affected Poe in his works “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee”.

Poe's style of writing is clearly complex and figurative because of his use of diction, symbolism or allegory, and allusions throughout his stories.
