Social media has become a huge part of people’s daily lives. Many people, especially teenagers, spend hours a day scrolling through multiple different social media platforms. The overused and over reliance on social media can be detrimental to people’s mental health. Media system dependency theory (MSD) provides that media is a powerful platform that can control people who are dependent on the media to achieve their goals. The more popular social media gets, the more it will effect people’s social skills, the more they will share of their lives leading them to be ridiculed and judged harshly by complete strangers. Social media has become an important part of society so that people can keep up with what their friends are doing. Maxian (2014) says that “because individuals have continuous access to media and the information they provide; media may increase power.”
Since social media has become a large part of people’s lives, they have grown dependent on social media, for entertainment and information of others. People’s dependency on social media occurs from them relying on social media for information. As people grow increasingly dependent on social media from a day-to-day basis, social media can play a factor in their mental state, which can lead to anxiety. Kim and Jung (2017) say that, “the power of mass media increases only when individuals have reasons to increase their dependence on the mass media” (p. 461).
I will be examining the effect that social media has on
Social Media is affecting our society in a negative way. From being the number one cause of divorce, ruining people’s careers, and being a haven for teen suicides, many misfortunes arise due to social media. People may not notice its damaging side effects yet it is slowly but surely proving detrimental to all involved in the game. By taking a step back and maintaining self-control, any human being immersed in the frenzy of social media can enjoy its perks without getting caught up in the whirlwind of unfortunate events.
The increased use of social media, and its prevalence in society, can have negative effect on individuals, especially adolescents, causing an increased incidence of depression and anxiety.
Some people may wonder what effect social media has on people worldwide. Many people are using social media daily and because of that, they might not know the effects that can be lurking behind a screen and causing harm to their mental health. Social media has many negative effects on mental health. Some people could think that mental health and social media has no relation, when it does. It is a fast-growing issue with many “cause and effect” reasons behind it. Each cause needs to be recognized along with the effect it has on the people who use social media.
73% of teenagers use what seems to be harmless, social media. Although it’s main function is to provide online communities for friends to interact on the internet, social media is a direct link to developing mental illnesses. Mental health is a very important issue, especially in the millennial generation, because it can impact a life drastically. Mental well-being is at risk when using social media because it flaunts what society considers “perfection” to be, can become easily addictive and social net workings can be a hostile environment. All of these issues that are promoted by social media or that exists there can seriously deteriorate mental health and drive illnesses forward.
Today, social media is used by almost all teens. There are so many unrealized negative effects of online apps that adolescents do not know about. In my paper, I wrote about how media can affect many parts of life. One of the quotes that helped demonstrate the great effect was written by Andrea McDaniels, “Studies have shown the around-the-clock world of social media takes a mental and emotional toll on some young people; it has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and decreased relationship skills”. This showed the many different parts of life that can be impacted by onlinemedia. Overall, this research was inspiring to begin making change by bringing awareness to the numerous mental health risks associated with social media
The study pointed out that students are addicted to social media and digital devices including smartphones, computers, and MP3 players in the similar way of drug and alcohol addictions. They do not feel comfortable without texting. Likewise, without connecting with media, students feel disconnected to their friends and family. Moreover, they feel extremely anxious when they have less information than other people. However, the study shows that there are not many students watching TV, reading newspaper, listening to radio, or checking mainstream media to update news. They tend to prefer to receive news via narration and personal interactions. This article will be helpful in supporting my argument in my research paper because the information can be used to support my stand, which is how social media affects mental health and social behaviors.
One in 12 high school students has attempted suicide in the past year due to social media (Rosen 2). The problem with social media is that, it's causing changes in eating and sleeping habits (Rosen 4). Depression is also taking a major role in this negativity (Rosen 3). Social media is said to be the leading cause of depression and anxiety (Ring 1). Teens are being diagnosed with disorders due to social media (Rosen 3). 10,000 adolescents showed that almost 1 in 3 teens have an anxiety disorder (Ring 1). Social media is destroying teens
Although social media can have positive outcomes, it has led to a growth in mental health problems and has triggered conditions specific to social media usage. Social media has become a huge social issue in this generation. Through social media, adolescents are exposed to new mental illnesses such as Facebook depression. There is increased exposure to harassment and bullying when using Social media.
Being on social media daily, affects the youth-even adults- physically, socially, and emotionally/mentally. Because technology is so addictive, over the past few years, social media has begun to influence and take control of our lives.
How is social media affecting one’s mental health? The more time that one spends browsing social platforms, the less satisfied one can be. These platforms are personal to the individual user because we tend to put an excessive amount of our personal lives on them and at that moment worry how others will perceive us. Consequently, society does not realize how much of an effect that social media plays in one’s mental health. It can have negative effects on the brain, which can lead to suicide, depression, and anxiety. Interactions on social media platforms can exacerbate these issues.
The addiction to social media use destroys our mental health just as much as it does to only avoiding the urge to look at it. Social media addiction is a classified mental health issue that can require professional treatment. Researchers at Nottingham Trent University in 2011 concluded that this issue leads to an assortment of problems such as relationship dilemmas, academic decline, and less participation in physical interactions in which our social media will replace our ties in real life (Brown 6). In the article “Smartphones: Uniting the World’s Children for Better, or Worse?”, an addictive behavior is defined as when one compulsively repeats the same behavior that subjects things in his or her life to. The addictive behavior social media can bring upon a person is as detrimental as drug or alcohol addictions (Smartphones: Uniting the World’s 2). Being addicted to this will impair your mental state and your sole desire will be to log back onto your feed. Your mind will become bogged down with social interactions 24/7 and your mental health will deteriorate from social media
Everyday more and more people become conditioned to their social media. This has become a bigger problem in today’s society. The reason this is a bigger problem is because of the children who grow up with technology at a hand’s reach. They have no idea what happens in the real world when their devices are glued to their hands.People are becoming more and more addicted to social media.
The popularity of social media giants such as Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are on the rise and so is our nation's overall poor mental health status (The State of Mental Health in America). Studies have shown that there is a direct link between our social media obsession and our poor mental health (Walton). Social media can lead to feelings of comparison, jealousy and even delusional behavior. Another effect that social media has on our mental health is that it often leads to feelings of sadness and loneliness. Lastly, social media addiction is one of the many things that affects our mental health. Studies show that social media is often the cause of poor mental health, it can cause comparison, jealousy, loneliness and lastly addiction.
Social media is one of the most common ways for people to communicate anywhere and at any time in modern society. Some people think that it is beneficial to have in society. Although, many people are starting to see negative effects arise from the use of social media as well. These negative effects are increasing and becoming more problematic every day. The disadvantages of social media far outweigh the advantages. Social media effects everyone in society, especially teenagers by negatively impacting their lives, face-to-face interactions, and mental health.
Growing up as a child, I witnessed how quickly people have adapted to technology in everyday life. Computers were used for business, and there were only house telephones in use. Now, we can stream countless of social media sites through our touch screen computers and our cell phones. Media such as Facebook, Twitter, even group chat forums are used by people daily. While this adaptation is fascinating, the stress and pressure of social media can be overwhelming. Social media disrupts the lives of young adults, causing them to have personal issues that would not occur without social media.
