The disposal of toxic waste should be a issue that is enforced heavily. Ever since corporations have used toxic waste to create products and created toxic waste from the production of products, toxic waste has been a major problem in the United States. It has developed almost everywhere in the United States due to companies not wanting to get rid of toxic waste correctly. Vallejo, a woman affected by toxic waste, says, “They were making money”(qtd. In Nazaryan). This is all that matters to big companies. They think that as long as they are making money that they are doing the right thing for their company and don’t have to worry about other people. This makes it harder on the people who are affected because they can’t do a lot to change what the company is doing unless they get enough people to challenge the company. Companies don’t want to do anything that will lose them money. This shows that it is the company's fault when people are being affected by toxic waste because the people are the ones being hurt while the companies sit back and make more money than they should. Toxic waste has many major effects on individuals and not just on a society as a whole. Some effects include “cancer, genital deformities, lower sperm count, obesity and diminished I.Q.” (Kristof par 2). This just goes to show that companies are hurting people way more than they think. Companies are disposing of toxic waste because it is helping them to make more money, but what they don’t realize is that
Recycling doesn’t affect people that much, but it does affect wildlife and animals. Like the six pack rings, soda comes in, fish get caught in it and they die. Another thing is plastic bags get thrown into the ocean and turtles mistake it for jellyfish, eat it and die. Would you believe me if I told you that glass, aluminum, paper and plastic are not A report from the Federal Highway Administration shows that 80 percent of the asphalt that is removed each year during widening and resurfacing is reused. Recycling has been around for thousands of years, but we still need to recycle even though people thought of this a long time ago. A consequence is the New York City Landfill. The New york city landfill contains 2.9 billion cubic feet of trash. The new york city landfill can be seen from space. The new york landfill is one of the only things that can be seen from space. Another consequence is that farmers in Wisconsin and Minnesota are just now starting to recycle. Minnesota and Wisconsin farms produce 60 million to 80 million pounds of plastic every year, but until now they had no way to get rid of it besides throwing
One of the main companies that add to the waste is the Koch brothers owning a major oil barons. These brothers use of Detroit for a dumping spot like someone trying get rid of some old furniture but, they are leaving behind a mess and affecting people while they are doing it. The people call it a black mountain, which is petroleum coke that discharges more than 50% carbon dioxide than coal. Which these brothers are denying any effect on the climate change. The government let these major companies do pretty much whatever they want as long the companies can pay the government at the end of the day. With Detroit having one the largest motor industry in the country they are at a risk if the people let these companies do whatever they want to their communities.
Alex Lin and many other teen activists trying to stop toxins from getting into the ground. These toxins can get into natural resources and water systems. Computer chemicals such as lead, mercury, and caldeum are to the human body. When computers are recycled and softly disarranged and recycle, but when they're thrown out they are gathered and put in landfills and dangerously seep into the ground. There is so much electronic waste they have to be cared with bulldozers and many other heavy machinery. This machinery is very expensive. People that throughout computers can just put it the blue bin instead of the green. Also these landfills are ugly sites. Landfills are in places like the outskirts of cities. They create ugly toxic hills that will be placed in the poorer parts of the city (outskirts). Theas landfills have tubes in the ground so the toxins can be released so the ground does not blow up. These toxins are released into the ground and the air for people to breathe. Finally, when People hat breathe this air can become very
Where toxic waste is disposed of is one of the reasons why racism and classism leads to environmental factors. As referred in an article called ”Emelle, Alabama:
In other words the overemphasis on research and safety brings to light more solutions to the problem, thus raising new questions regarding safety, and instilling new fears in the public’s minds. As a result of those new found safety concerns the new fear instilled in the public will make them more reluctant to storing the waste, when that happens the waste will continue to pile on, eventually becoming extremely dangerous and prone to becoming a
These chemical wastelands are a type of pollution that affect the environment. These things are harmful to humans and animals and kill plant life all around. Not only can the cause birth defects, it can also cause cancer. Areas with pollution/chemical waste have higher risks of cancer then safe clean
Toms River—the arrogance of companies in Ocean County, New Jersey affected the environment and human health from dumping waste, discharging acid-laced wastewater, and polluting the air and water exposed toxic chemicals that made children become at higher risk for cancer. Government negligence left these chemical companies avoid prosecution and dumping waste improperly became a common practice. The main idea from this book is the environment does impact your health significantly. Therefore, it is best when regulations are being managed and controlled. Also, studies should be approached in different ways to prove an evidence and remain open to new possibilities and exposures. The main problem in Toms River were regulations were not being enforced
Actions are Unethical - Definition of ethical behaviour is broader than just its legality. Organizations have a broader responsibility to its stakeholders which include the surrounding communities and the environment. Government agencies are influenced by industry and do not always prioritize the interests of the public. How can any waste dumping be safe?
This case highlights the likelihood of friendly relations between industry and government. It was recorded that Ford Motor Company dumped paint waste from 1967-1971. I find it hard to believe that not a single government official considered looking into where all of the company’s waste was being disposed of within that four-year period. It also took the federal government until the 1980s to list this area of Ringwood, New Jersey as one of the most toxic superfund sites. While I do understand that historically the United States has had strong ties between industry and government I find it appalling that both federal and state governments failed to advocate for the Ramapoughs.
Every year, millions of tons of plastic are tossed into the ocean, harming all types of marine animals as well as the environment. Hundreds of marine mammals like whales and dolphins are found washed ashore filled with bottle caps, plastic bags and basically anything they can swallow. Not only does plastic pollution harm marine life, but it affects the entire ecosystem. If a predator is dependent on a certain species for prey and the predator has a role in the environment, it is important for the prey to not be disturbed by pollution. If that species of prey were to go extinct, then the predator species could be seriously impacted as a result. These problems warrant the need for more research into the magnitude and causes of plastic
To begin with this problem is that factory owners are placing their chemical waste in low income area where kids be playing outside and where babies are born. The article found that “ Three of the largest site were located in primarily black zip codes, and these three “accounted for about 40 percent of the total estimated hazardous waste landfills capacity in the united states” These kids are being forced to be around these chemical wastes and smoke and can't do anything about it. The factory owners can make money off these low income area and people can't do anything about it. Most of these factories do help the community out with benefits and many more, but the others are there just for the money
Everyday there is waste being dumping into our water sources and no one is held accountable, and even if people do try to do something, they are often shut down or the other company is too big and strong and can’t be taken out by a lawsuit.
Hazardous waste and its proper disposal have become a major sociological problem today due to its capability of contaminating the area in which we live and its potential to be lethal to all living things. In order for the United States and the rest of the world to save itself from a potentially life threatening problem they must fix the causes which lead to the improper disposal of hazardous wastes and like materials. Some reasons that hazardous waste has become a problem in the United States today is due to the breakdown in enforcing laws for the proper disposal of such wastes, a lack of initiative on big companies behalf to spend money on proper disposal, and the ease of disposing of such wastes illegally.
There are some reasons for the problem. The first reason is that the effects of the thrown rubbish are very dangerous and extremely harmful. According to Miller (1987), global industrial organizations produce over 80,000 different chemicals (para. 5). Basically, garbage is old, dirty and wet, so that it is a perfect place for bacteria and other viruses to stay in. Rubbish growth in cities has been a problem all over the world for centuries. Landfills have always been regarded as sources of illnesses and unpleasant smells. The harmful wastes from the garbage spread through the ground from paint, chemicals, petrol, batteries, and other toxic materials that have been thrown away into the garbage. The toxic chemicals get into the water pipes and spread through the people’s drinking water. Another reason of that problem is that people have created all these disasters, which are connected with environmental pollution. The more modern technologies are created, the more unbelievable become wastes and remains of what is produced. From this, man is responsible for what he or she created and for the following consequences. Anxieties about the environment have made people more aware of their environmental footprints or the kind of waste they leave behind during their existence. The difficulty is that an average person leaves an incredible amount of wastes in his or her lifetime. According to Lovejoy (1912), all biodegradable substances, contained in
Another concern is directed toward animal rights. The mishandling of waste can cause animals to get sick and spreading of diseases. Animals do not know wrong from right, so it is up to the humans to handle the waste disposal the right way so we can live in this earth happy and healthy.
