Elaine Parker’s Great Depression Story It was 1929 and Herbert Hoover was the president. Elaine Parker, age ten, lived on a small farm in Clearwater, Arkansas. She enjoyed being outside and helping on the farm, which is how she got her many freckles. Elaine’s bright green eyes observed everything, never letting a detail pass by without her knowledge. She enjoyed wearing her long hair in a deep chocolaty brown braid, so that it stayed out of the way when she was working. The one thing that Elaine loved the most out of everything in the world was school. Elaine loved learning new things and reading books. There was one thing, one person, that Elaine despised about her school. Michael Butler, the boy whose papa was the doctor for the rich people; He had a huge crush on Elaine. Although Elaine did not like him at all. Michael Butler was always bragging about his fancy house and how he could buy …show more content…
She was devastated. Her Mama was sick, and she was going to die if they didn’t get a doctor. Elaine was so busy crying that she did not notice when Michael Butler walked in. He walked over towards her, and asked her what was wrong. Elaine didn’t really mean to tell Michael, but all the words just poured out; Losing the field, her Mama getting sick and that they couldn’t afford a doctor to help her Mama. Michael felt so bad for Elaine, and he wanted to help her. But how? Even his family was running low on money. Then an idea struck him. His Papa could take care of Elaine’s Mama! Michael wasn’t sure if his Papa would do it, but he could at least try. After school that day Michael went home to talk to his Papa. He explained the situation to him, and at first Papa did not want to go. “They obviously can’t pay me to take care of Elaine’s mother, what would I get out of it?” said Michael’s Papa. Eventually, Michael persuaded his Papa to do it, “Can’t you imagine how sad it would be if Elaine’s Mama died?” he
Annie then looked up and began to think to herself I wonder how many months Adam has left with us, wait maybe it's only weeks he has with us. Breathe Annie, let's just think positive everything is going to turn out just fine. She then walked over to Adam and gave him a big kiss on the forehead as she did every morning. Adam said, “ I can't believe it's summer already!” Annie replied, “ I know this summer is going to be a lot of fun.” Annie then walked to the kitchen island to return her items back to the pantry thinking to herself Does he even know he is sick and dying? He is acting as if everything is fine? Annie then returned to her room to get ready for the day. Ten weeks had passed since the day Annie was told. Adam was severely worse and days away from death, he was now in the hospitals ICU unit. Annie tried everything make Adam feel better, she regretted all the times she yelled or made fun of him. She would do anything do have two more years with him. Annie and her father left the hospital to return home and shower, her mother hadn’t
Johnny walked into the living room, his stomach feeling queasy. His parents look his way in dull manner. They didn’t want Johnny home. They like him out with his friends, not bothering them. Truth is, they felt as if they wouldn’t be good parents even if they tried, so they thought “Why try?” They also didn’t want Johnny to end up like them so, they pushed him away and acted like they couldn’t stand him. Little did they know they were just hurting Johnny by doing so. They had planned to kick Johnny out on this night. They thought he would end up better off with the Greasers. So, when Johnny walked in his mother said, “Go pack your stuff and get out my house.”
Annie showed the Depression era because of the hope Annie had. I could tell it was during the depression era because of the clothes people were wearing and by how many people were out on the streets. Annie has lots of hope she had hope that her parents were going to come get her because they didn’t have enough money to care for her anymore. Grace, Mr.Warbucks assistant, came to the orphanage where she was taking Annie to Mr. Warbuck’s place for a week. Eventually Mr. Warbuck’s got used to her and Mr. Warbucks wanted to adopt her but Annie refused. Annie was very lucky because most people didn’t get the chance to live even in a house during the Great Depression. Annie refused for Mr. Warbucks to adopt her because she really had hope that
I used to think that mental health wasn't a huge deal. I never paid too much attention to depression, because I thought it was just something that certain people went through, some more often than others. After a specific incident in my life, my eyes were opened, and my world was changed. Depression is not a phase, it's a dangerous illness.
“There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” is a highly impactful quote spoken by Laurell K. Hamilton. Depression is a serious mental condition that is characterized by extreme feelings of sadness, worthlessness or hopelessness, fatigue, irritability, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate, and insomnial or excessive sleeping. Statistics show that between ten percent and fifteen percent of young people exhibit symptoms of depression. Depression may have physical or emotional causes and may require long-term treatment. Depending on the type of depression and the severity, treatment may include prescription antidepressant drugs or psychotherapy. Controversy surrounds the decision
This may seem quite far fetched, but the Crash of 1929 made this a reality.
The Great Depression not only affected the United States but the world in general. In my estimation some the reasons for the depression was the combination of the greatly unequal distribution of wealth throughout the 1920’s and the debts not paid back from WWI.
Depression sucks. Thinking that you’re useless, unworthy of anything good, it’s painful. In my experiences, it’s usually caused by someone else. I have been bullied since I was 5 years old by my neighbors kids. Once at a party at their house, he for some reason started to beat me hard. I’m not gonna lie I was a year older than him and I could’ve easily beaten him to a pulp but for some reason, I just froze, took all of his beatings. He did this in front of everyone at the party and no one did anything. Only my mom and a friend that was there wanted to punish him because what he did was unforgivable. No punishments were given and that’s how it is every single time he would beat me, mock me, whatever he did to me. The world spoiled was practically created to describe him. He was
In 1929, A Yale University Economist Irving Fisher stated. " The nation is marching along a permanently high plateau of prosperity".(5) 5 days later the stock market crashed and the worst economic downturn in American history called the "Great Depression" began. The Depression started in 1929 and would last for a decade until we entered War World II. The Great Depression affected every part of economy and no job was safe. In 1929 unemployment was at 1.5 million and by 1933 unemployment reached over 13 million which meant 1 out of 4 were out of work (3). Some who were successful businessmen before the stock market crash and now selling pencils or apples on the street corners after the crash .Many business closed
Susie’s mother opened the door to let Molly, Susie’s babysitter, inside. Ten-month old Susie seemed happy to see Molly. Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. Molly had sat for Susie many times in the past month, and Susie had never reacted like this before. When Susie’s mother returned home, the sitter told her that Susie had cried until she knew that her mother had left and then they had a nice time playing with toys until she heard her mother’s key in the door. Then Susie began crying once again.
Imagine your life is a bed of roses, everyone you know is prospering, and everything is going fine. Until the time comes where your parents don’t say there is a large problem, but you can feel the tension in your home. The portion of food that lands on your plate is reduced, the pleasures you had before diminish before your eyes. T You don’t say anything but you observe something isn’t right, but you just can’t put your finger on it. Until finally one day your parents stop eating and watch you eat and things just begin to spiral down from there. The kids of the horrible time period of the Great Depression went through it all, they had gone hungry for weeks without proper clothing and trying to get any food they could scrape together. They
The era of the 1930's through the 1940's is one of the darkest periods in America’s history. It was a time of despair for all Americans. This dreadful time was caused by various reasons and hit America when it was least expected. It also had many effects which left an impact on America still up to this day. At that time, there was no abundance of anything: no jobs, no food, and certainly no abundance of money. However, there was surely an abundance of sadness. America had no hope since the money was a thin, green line, and there was no food or clean water to drink. The monstrosity began on the year of 1930 and lasted up to the year of 1940 or in some places even more. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl were one of the most famous
Casey gazed up and with a broad smile said, “Elijah, sweet kid, you’ll love him!” Without context, she simply stood up and began walking towards the classrooms in which I promptly followed. The collages that littered the hallway walls and the mildly offensive odor of school lunches soon brought a wave of nostalgia and emotions that was abruptly halted when Casey introduced myself to Elijah. Met with only blank stares, all he could say was, “hello.”
The moment that we walked into our home I lay on my comfy cot and cry for 2 hours.
"We are not makers of history but we are made by history." My grandmother, Anita Clark, was born October 17, 1931 in Trenton, Tennessee. She lived through traumatizing events such as The Great Depression, Pearl Harbor Attack, Brown vs Board case, JFK Assassination, and 9/11. So without a doubt, she witnessed and was affected by these historical events.
