Elderly drivers and young drivers are just as dangerous as each other are, they both have a habit to ignore or even forget road rules and take other risks behind the wheel of a car. I always hear people talking about old age driver and how bad or how good they are so this is why I am writing this information report.

My Nan is one of the 419,615 drivers in Victoria who are over 70. According to VicRoads, there are 58 people licensed in Victoria who are aged over 100 who drive and more than 13,000 in their 90s. Statistic say older drivers are causing as many accidents as some young drivers. Drivers who are over the age of 75 have a higher risk of being killed in a crash than any other age group. In Victoria VicRoads allows drives 75 years or older to continue driving, but if they develop a long term or permanent physical or mental condition, which may affect their ability to drive they are to immediately notify VicRoads. This will then be noted on their licence. In New South Wales when a driver turns 75 years a medical review is to be undertaken every two years, no matter what type of licence they hold. Once they turn 85 years a hands-on driving assessment is to be undertaken every two years and is be passed to retain their licence. Once a driver reaches the age of 80 in Western Australia, they are required to undertake a medical assessment once a year and complete a senior driver’s licence renewal declaration to enable them to have their driver’s licence renewed. Drivers in Tasmania are no longer required to undertake a medical assessment but are encouraged to have their driving ability assessed once they are 75 years or older. Drivers 75 years and older in the ACT are to provide a yearly medical certificate that states they are still fit to drive. In Queensland once a driver reaches the age of 75 years they are to provide a medical certificate for motor vehicle driver and they are required to have it with them at all times while driving. A new certificate is to be obtained once every year. In South Australia, a yearly self-assessment is to be obtained if the driver does not have a medical condition once they reach 75 years. This assessment needs to be undertaken by a doctor. If the assessment is not obtained then their drivers licence will not be valid. In Northern Territory, there are no age restrictions on drivers, but they are required to advise of any medical conditions, which will affect their driving
