The article, “2016 Report to Congress on HIT Progress,” explains how electronic health record became a highly used resource in the past six years. Most healthcare organizations have decisively moved from the paper based industry to an electronic records system. As the 2016 Report to Congress on HIT Progress shows, at this time, a huge amount of electronic health data exists across the United States, which was not available many years ago. This is a great opportunity for future generations to advance the practitioners’ awareness of decision making towards treatment and quality of care. The electronic health record is now necessary and very convenient for doctors to use towards review patient’s medical history.
Federal governmental agencies and offices cooperated to develop the “Federal Health IT Strategic Plan 2015-2020,” which will help to improve quality of care, privacy, efficiency of the health care system, exchange of electronic health information with many stakeholders effectively. It is not enough to have an electronic health record if the healthcare entity is unable to share information with patients and other health providers in a meaningful way. Reliable collection of data is critical to both clinical decision making as well as for reuse of the information in a variety of ways, including research and public health.In order to accomplish this ONC has initiated the interoperabilitiy standards advisory to assist with compliance and improve interoperability.Although interoperabilty is one of the goals of moving to electronic health records, progress lags behind.
