Emerson's Self-Reliance : Critical Analysis

1. When Emerson wrote “Self- Reliance” in 1841, the country was still expanding. The spirit of independence, whether it is the separation from England or the westward migration of settlers, was prominent of the minds of many. Inhabitants considered themselves “Americans”, belonging to a particular community with an identity. Emerson promoted a cultural and intellectual type of independence (Woodlief). He declared that the belief in self is what will make an individual grow which in turn will produce growth in society. In his writing, Emerson states that people need to avoid conformity in his statement, “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string”, which additionally also promotes individualism (Emerson B: 270). He believed that humans were inherently good and that each person has unique talents. In order to be self-reliant, you must have trust in yourself and not be afraid to express your views. Emerson says that being misunderstood is not bad, “Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates and Jesus and Luther and Copernicus and Galileo and Newton”, furthermore, “To be great is to be misunderstood” (Emerson B; 274). If a person is objective, they will be able to critique societal norms and not simply “follow the crowd”. Listening to your own insights and not rejecting them because they are not in line with the current modes of thought will allow a person to grow. 2.
