Strain Theories Introduction In the United States, our society places a bearing weight on success and what that success is supposed to look like. American citizens all want to be successful in every aspect of their life. As we know the American people live their life in order to be able to purchase clothing, expensive vehicles, big houses, and other materialistic items. Everyone does not achieve this goal, simply because they do not have the means to achieve those goals. Certain groups are prone to being unable to fulfill those goals because of the lack of resources that they encounter such as lower class citizens. The strain theory views crime and delinquency as a result of the high level of frustration that the American people endure when they fall short of achieving their “American dream.” Durkheim and his concept of Anomie The correlation of anomie or strain and crime typically is traced back to Robert Merton, but I believe that the concept of anomie actually dates back to Emile Durkheim. However, Durkheim believed that society had to mechanisms needed to decrease a person’s greedy appetite, noting that societies have the power to enforce laws that place limits on individuals. Anomie, understood by Durkheim is when the society’s ability to help limits the greedy appetite of individuals breaks down, that their greedy tendencies are uncontrolled. Durkheim was the creator of a model in regards to working with theories and how research can be combined to help with the testing of differences across a plethora of social groups.
