What really happened to Homer that night? Well, we will never know, but I believe it was Emily’s doing. Emily was a very quiet and creepy middle aged woman who was overweight.
Her home was very old and square, it says in the story “It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street”. As you see from the evidence from the story her house was big and had cupolas. That neighborhood was empty because of the garages and cotton gins they obliterated the august names. If he said yes, she would give him the gift. If he choose not to accept her marriage proposal she would make him suffer by poisoning him. So she got an idea to buy arsenic and a men’s toilet for Homer with his initials engraved. With these items she would test Homer to see if he would be with her forever. She thought to herself that if she ends up having to poison Homer, that he was not going to leave her either way. Just like with her father’s corpse, she would keep Homer with herself forever. This time she wasn 't going to take the loss and be alone, ever again.
After getting the toilet and arsenic she had to go get groceries. She wanted to really surprise Homer with a grand jester. Emily decided she would cook Homer the best meal of his life, or maybe even the last meal of his life. So after that evening she prepared his favorite meal, Chopped Chicken Liver Pate with his favorite wine, Chateau Margaux. His favorite cake was carrot cake and so she decided that she would end meal with a slice of cake. The cake is what the poison would be in. If he decided that he would reject her then she would play it off and give him the cake with the drops of poison if he accepted he would get the safe cake. Emily wasn’t much of a cook but today she will wow Homer no matter what, after all he was going to be her husband soon. While she waited for him to get home she put the toilet upstairs in the bedroom. She wanted to make sure everything was perfect.
