In certain situations, various people express emotions differently. Some people express happy feelings in a time of pain, as they are just expressing true emotions. In “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, published on April 19th of 1894, Kate lives her own story for one hour. This hour was one of the happiest hours of her life. In all of Kate’s short stories, she expressed her marriage, sexuality, and identity. This all derived from her very tragic childhood. Kate was the third of five children, however, her sisters died shortly after birth, her half-brothers died in their early twenties, and her father passed away. Kate was left with women figures, as she introduced the modern feminist literary movement. The main character of the story, Mrs. Mallard, becomes liberated by the news that her husband has died from a railroad disaster. During the hour, Mrs.Mallard fantasizes about how happy she will be, and the freedom she has gained. When Mrs.Mallard hears the shocking news that her husband is alive, she has a heart attack and dies from the joy that kills. In “The Story of an Hour,” the theme of voices in the dark is prevalent when Mrs. Mallard finds out her husband supposedly died, the fantasy of her freedom, and the discovery that her husband is now alive. Mrs. Mallard is first described as having heart problems, physically and emotionally. Her heart problems could allude to her emotional instability, and the failure to live freely.
