Throughout Ender’s Game, Ender is isolated, kept apart from other children that could be friends. Ender is not the only one separated in the book though as there is Bean, Graff and Mazer Rackham. I am, writing this essay on how Isolation changed the people in Enders games behaviour and how it is the central theme of the book. The first paragraph will be on Ender's isolation, the next article will be on beans isolation, and the last one will be on Graff and Mazer. I will provide a quote then explain on each paragraph. First, Ender was isolated many times inside the book inside this paragraph contains evidence of how it changed him. The main point of this section is that Ender turned because of the way he was isolated during this book. …show more content…
These people wanted to manipulate Ender’s natural character by taking him from those he loves, Forcing him to depend only on himself and not need assistance from anyone. While this learned self-reliance looks good for the I.F, Ender will break after being detached from everyone he grew close to during this book. My point is the fact that it changes the way a person behaves, this passage explains how after they completed what they wanted to do (isolate him)he became depressed. I feel that a message the author was trying to send was that no compassion for the way someone else is feeling leads to ruthlessness. The people that were talking about Ender did not care for the fact that they were making a six year old depressed, this ruthlessness changed a shy boy into a sad, lonely …show more content…
Shen changed quite a lot after he was separated from the group. “But a few chafed under Bernard's rule Ender, watching knew who resented Bernard. Shen was small, ambitious, and easily needled. Bernard had discovered quickly, and started calling him worm“. Here they are singling out Shen and isolating him because he has a loose bum. Shen's character changed after this he became shy and self-conscious. This relates to the author's message as the other kids were ruthless in the way they treated her with no compassion. My topic for this essay was on how Isolation changed the people in enders games behaviour and how it is the central theme of the book. My main point was on how Ender was isolated, how Bean was separated, and Shen. Ender went from being a shy boy to a sad, lonely leader. Bean went from having a big ego to being quite respectful. The author was trying to show how having no compassion led to ruthlessness. Teachers could learn from this novel. A few teachers have said things about a student sometimes mean, sometimes good which led to the child being left out and
He was moved and sent to a group with much older kids. Once again the author chose to use uniqueness along with perseverance and smarts to allow the reader to return the basic elements displayed in the book. The sentence should cause the reader to relapse into the ideas of ‘how does this relate to the previous scenes and what could cause a change?’. Given the fact that Ender is a young child, the use of the previously listed elements are amplified as the main character is forced to experience trials different than
Chapter Summary In this chapter Ender makes the decision to go to the Battle school. The principle of the school comes and visits Ender’s home. Graff tells Ender how the school is like and tells him they need soldiers to fight the buggers. Graff tells Ender his life would change and he will not see his family.
At the beginning of the novel, the author describes a six-year-old boy named Ender with a lot of
2 major and reoccurring themes throughout Ender’s Game is manipulation and deception. Much of this novel is about how adults manipulate Ender into fulfilling their needs. They trick him, lie to him, and tell him just enough so that he can defeat the buggers. Ender pretty much sums this up when he says, “I've spent my life as someone's pawn" (Pg. 97). On one hand, it seems wrong to lie to and cheat a kid. On the other hand, the adults manipulate him to ensure the survival of the human race. Besides the manipulative relationship between the adults and Ender, there are a number of other relationships full of manipulation: Peter manipulates Valentine, Peter and Valentine manipulate the world, and
She’d written before, and they didn’t let any of those letters through. Those might have been real, but this was asked for, this was part of their manipulation. And the despair filled him again. Now he knew why. Now he knew what he hated so much. He had no control over his own life. They ran everything. They made all the choices.. The one real thing, the one precious real thing was his memory of Valentine, the person who loved him... and they had taken her and put her on their side. She was one of them now.”(Ch. 9 Pg 150-151). Ender’s thought proves that he only had one thing he loved and that was the sister that was now on everyone else’s side but Ender’s making him fall into even more despair. Though isolation creates creativity, despair and unhappiness are the side effects that will make any child
Take my monitor, and I am just like Peter. "(1,8)Here Ender is reflecting on his recent behaviour when he encountered Stilson and his gang. He is worried his personality is becoming more and more similar to Peter since his monitor got removed, and devastated by this fact he cries and regrets what he did to Stilson, something Peter never would have done.
At the beginning of the novel, Ender wants to be a normal kid, so that his brother will like him and be his friend. Two government officials, who have watched Ender his whole life, are talking about Ender’s personality and say “He’s too malleable. Too willing to submerge himself
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card is about a boy named Ender Wiggin. When he is 6 years old he is taken from his home to go train in a place called Battle School to fight aliens, or “buggers”. He learns to command an army and plays games to train for the battle against the buggers. When the game is over, Ender learns it isn’t a game at all and they have won the war against the buggers. Two themes in this books are “Life isn’t always going to be fair”, and “Make the best of what you have.” These two themes are in the book because Ender has to deal with having a horrible army to train and the teachers aren’t fair to Ender at all.
139). In the beginning no one cared about little Ender Wiggin. Ender had no friends and he also had zero respect. Now right as Ender is getting more friends, everyone is giving him so much respect. He has improved so rapidly and people are almost scared of him, which leads to Ender getting all of this new respect. He feels like there is a wall between him and his friends, because now he has to relate to them on a whole new level. At first he could talk with them and be a kid around them, and now it is like people expect him to act and be more mature . Another quote that proves my point is “Ender Wiggin crying?” (Card. 151). He can not do things without people finding out, and they put him on such a high pedestal that Ender can not do certain things without getting
The novel Ender's Game expresses that Ender being isolated in multiple situations is the cause the of his lost childhood. Ender's isolation is caused by the characters in the Battle School and the removal of the monitor. All of these situations prevent him from getting close to others. Hyrum Graff indicates that he will isolate Ender before he arrives at Battle School. He does that by telling the launch group Ender is the only excellent mind there, Graff does that to make Ender stand out from the others and to form him into the best
Ender has endured a great deal of isolation to be shaped into an elite soldier but it has unfortunately overwhelmed him with despair and loneliness. Struggling
Firstly, once Ender arrives at the Battle school, at the age of only six years old, he initially faces many difficulties with assimilating into his launch group, along with the other children, "The other boys talked and joked and bragged and laughed. Ender kept his silence. He toyed with the idea of trying to be like the other boys. But he couldn't think of any jokes, and none of theirs seemed funny. Wherever their laughter came from, Ender couldn't find such a place in himself."
Viktor E. Frankl (who is he) once said “When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves.” This quote suggests that sometimes things are out of one’s hands, and you must change your perspective to make a positive outcome of the situation. In Orson Scott Card's “Ender's Game”, the violent and manipulative environment that surrounds Ender leads him to become a cynical and jaded character. This demonstrates that children should be protected from such environments to preserve their innocence.
When Ender finds out that he killed a whole race he is angry and says “’I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer!”’(297).Throughout his journey Ender thinks that he is a replica of Peter. This is one of the many instances where Ender feels his whole persona is being manipulated into a copy of Peter by leaders at Battle School. Once Ender recognizes that most of his choices have been influenced by commanders such as Colonel Graff he decides to make a decision of his own by finding the buggers a new home.
The society surrounding Ender was hostile and volatile. This is shown in the very beginning of the book when Ender is playing with
