Voting Rights & Equality
America has eventually lived up to “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” NOT historically but today. This was a phrase spoken by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. At the time Jefferson made this accusation there were a lot of things going on that proved that this was incorrect. The country made decisions where they pushed for equal rights but still today there is some “white rage”. One right that was preventing this for “all men” to live in happiness was the right to vote. Now when saying “all men” are created equal, blacks and women were excluded still after the antebellum period. There were tons of movement and acts that pushed the boundaries for the country. Lincoln would stand up to preserve the union in which he issues the Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 1st, 1863. This freed slaves in all portions of the United States including the confederate territories. Still even a few centuries later blacks would not get equal rights. The right they wanted the most was the right to vote. Like the blacks, women were excluded and wanted their voices to be heard.
The 15th amendment ratified in 1870 insured that “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of
