Ernest Hemingway’s Portrayal of Margot Macomber In the short story “The Short Life of Francis Macomber," Hemingway portrays many emotions and motivating forces behind his characters’ intentions. Ernest Hemingway endured humiliation and disappointment at many points in his life; he wanted to join the military, but was rejected due to a health condition (Young). Hemingway also underwent four failed marriages (Young). These experiences help influence Hemingway’s writing style, especially in “The Short Life of Francis Macomber,” when he demonstrates the challenges the characters undergo throughout the short story. She rides with Francis, Wilson, and the gun bearers to the fields in search of their prey. Francis lays eyes on the buffalo, and he immediately reacts. He feels the need to prove his courage and power to his wife because of her continuous doubt. Once Margot sees Francis accomplish this task, her attitude changes from controlling and superior to terrified of Francis’ actions. Margot says, “‘You’ve gotten awfully brave, awfully suddenly,’ his wife said contemptuously, but her contempt was not secure. She was very afraid of something” (Hemingway 26). Margot is nervous and scared immediately following Francis’ courageous act of killing the three buffalo from the motor car. She knows that he might have the courage to leave her and find someone else because she no longer has control over him. Margot also shows her terrified nature when the narrator says, “In the car Macomber’s wife sat very white-faced. ‘You were marvellous, darling,’ she said to Macomber” (Hemingway 23). Margot’s face drains when she witnesses Francis kill the buffalo. The paleness of her face shows her shock after Francis performs this manly act.
