Essay Comparing Odyssey And The Epic Of Gilgamesh

When reading texts such as The Odyssey, and The Epic of Gilgamesh it’s extremely hard not to point out the many similarities in which each narrative share. Many of the themes or messages within said texts have oddly been identical to one another. This paper will begin to bridge the gap between the two and spotlight the differences all a while formulating an argument that can be concluded solely based off my findings.
The Epic of Gilgamesh written by Homer, is a narrative that has been translated into plain text following the life of Gilgamesh the main protagonist. In many epics such as Gilgamesh it follows the trials and tribulations of a larger than life character, hence why we refer to them as epics. Perseverance is the actions of “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” This has be proven by both main characters Odysseus and Gilgamesh in some way shape or form. Characters such as Odyssey who had to endure several hardships never gave up or gave in even in the midst of him being first taken on a extended voyage, then secondly, being captured by the Goddess Calypso, to lastly fighting once again to get home to his wife and son after being freed. Whereas Gilgamesh struggled with a journey of life after the loss of his dear Friend Enkidu. All he had were old thoughts of memories of the good times their shared and the many feats that together they achieved such as the defeat of Hummable.
