Hugh O’Brien is typically known for his roles in various movies such as Love has Many Faces and The Game of Death. However, many people do not know about his impact on today’s youth including myself. In 1958, Hugh spent a month in South Africa, where he recognized the need for volunteering and leadership in the teens of America and the world. Upon returning, he created HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar). HOBY is a weekend long seminar for high school sophomores to develop their character, increase their leadership, and instill the desire to volunteer within their communities. In April of 2014, I attended HOBY as a sophomore representative from Marmaduke High School. I was unaware of what to expect from my weekend at HOBY. However, shortly after my arrival, I realized those three days would forever change my life.
When I arrived at HOBY it was 11 P.M and I had just endured 8 hours on an exhausting bus ride to Bentonville, Arkansas. As soon as the other ambassadors and I stepped off the bus, there was a line of volunteers cheering and chanting. For a moment, I thought “It is 11 P.M. I want to go to bed yet you are screaming at me. Go away.” Soon after, I found

HOBY has given me a positive mentality. Throughout the ghastly days, you can and will find wonderful phenomena. If you remain negative, then your life remains negative. HOBY has allowed me to believe in myself and my potential. As a result, I have blossomed through other programs at my school. Shortly after HOBY, I became active in my FBLA chapter. Throughout the past year I have been elected President of my local chapter, Secretary of my district and state chapter. I candidly believe that if I would have never experienced HOBY then I would’ve never had the courage, desire, and drive to run for any office let alone all three. In addition, I am also Student Body President of Marmaduke High
After reading this it makes me want to be a manager for Trader Joe's. There making a lot of money. But with the workers that work for them there given a lot of benefits with all the health, dental, vision and etc. Also they're given promotions from within philosophy because they're privately own. Also they tell there employees to try the produce so when someone has a question about something they can take them to something that is something there thinking about or better. Trader Joe’s has designed jobs to increase job satisfaction by showing appreciation in providing more benefits to their employees than other chain grocers.
Throughout my school years, I have always tried to be a positive role model for younger students as well as my peers. This year I decided that the best way to serve my school was to participate in our school’s Student Leadership Council. It has proven to be a fantastic decision for me. I succeeded in getting the most votes out of all of the candidates and have had a great experience taking a leadership role in my school. I feel like I have become a much better leader and role model because of Student Leadership Council. I have been really fortunate to be exposed to the Jeter’s Leaders program, since they come to our school to mentor us as SLC members. It has been an incredible experience, and I would really love to continue with it. As an eighth grader at Saint Augustine, we are required to mentor our younger students. I
Also, Russ (2013) stated, “children and youth of Prince George’s County face many challenges, and the solution requires action on the part of the entire community. Philanthropists, Businesses, School Leaders, and Policymakers are called to take action to end our disconnected youth crisis and ensure all students graduate high school, college and career ready.” In addition, educating our youth must begin early in a child’s development life, simply because this period provides a foundation for learning and social development resulting in
Despite it being middle school, my leadership of the first ever NJHS at Sparta Middle School, taught me valuable things about leading and being part of a club with such prestige. As the inaugural chapter of the society, we ran the student-faculty basketball game, baked cookies for Project Self-Sufficiency, and collected food and then visited a local food bank. I learned how much a group of students could impact the community with their actions, something I had previously thought impossible. I will draw from those experiences when presenting my opinion on new service projects and will also try to introduce successful techniques that I used back during my time spent as President of
At the end of ninth grade, I was given an opportunity I could not refuse to become an ambassador in the Peer Leadership Program at North Warren Regional. Peer Leadership gives its members, including myself the opportunity to be role models of the younger students. Over the years I’ve given countless seventh graders assistance with their lockers and have guided them through their schedule to ease any
Last autumn, she made one of the best decisions of her life; to be a candidate for the Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council. She worked extensively on her interviewing skills, her speech, and the format of her poster to transform her into a representative of Kansas 4-H. Through the 4-H Youth Leadership Council, she not only expanded her leadership skills, but she helped others come out of their shell, and influenced their lives for the (hopefully) better.
Each of us will show we are leaders by being positive role models for these young people by showing them we genuinely care about them and their futures. We represent the service component by taking time to work in an organization that is in need of volunteers. We recognize that this is not a faith-based organization, but we chose to act on our individual faiths by doing God’s work and serving others. We will demonstrate the pillar of learning by working with children from different backgrounds than we grew up in. Also, we will encourage the children to learn through mentally stimulating activities in a fun
Starting from Girl Scouts to CJSF, my early love for aiding others quickly developed. However, my most pivotal service experience is my involvement in Key Club. As I became further involved in this organization, the thought of advancing my role by becoming an officer became very persistent in my mind. Being extremely shy and withdrawn, the idea of being a leader was incredibly intimidating to even fathom. Despite my shyness and anxiety causing me to doubt myself, my love for serving others outweighed any uncertainty I had in myself. After a daunting speech and election process, I gladly accepted the challenge of a club secretary, which has given me the opportunity to not only serve my community, but the members of my club. My experience as a Key Club officer has enriched my perception of myself and widened my range to serve. It has taught me to take risks and step out of my comfort zone in order to pursue my passions. Key Club has served as a platform for me to become more engrossed in my community and lead me to consider careers in which I can help those in
The leadership and mentoring program at SCFS provide various recreational and educational activities that target diverse racialized (Somali, Syrian, Nepalese, Iraqi) youth who live in the high-risk neighborhoods across the city. All of our programs encourage leadership within our youth and we do this by strong mentorship and coaching. The youth are an integral part of our community and we believe that mentorship and coaching are essential for developing our youth leaders. We help with the development of our youth by supporting them in the navigation of the education system in particular post secondary. We also connect our youth to mentors within certain career fields they are interested in so that they can start to build their own career paths.
The motto of 4-H is “To Make the Best Better,” and I experienced individual growth through this community by gaining valuable leadership techniques. As vice president, I organized numerous service projects, including valentines for nursing home residents and Santa’s Elves, which provided ten underprivileged children with Christmas toys. Additionally, I helped prepare for the 4-H summer camp by planning registration, activities and songs. As pledge and song leader at camp, I led campfire circles to continue the joy from the day’s activities into the night. This previous year, I earned the position of lead teen at camp, which involved acquiring information regarding schedule changes and distributing it to my fellow counselors. My position challenged
In fifth and sixth grade, I was invited to attend The National Young Leadership Forum, an organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented youth. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a week in Washington D.C., where I learned the qualifications of a righteous leader and to develop academic abilities and interests. I will bring my knowledge of leadership to sustain a school community in which students will strive to maintain integrity and trust with each other. By engaging in community service, I have an opportunity to learn experientially, expose myself to diversity, and develop a sense of responsibility. By volunteering in multiple ways in the last several years, I was able to knit hats for children in hospitals, help at a local food bank, create and donate bookmarks for third graders, and help at the Bellaire Public Library. Helping others has given me a great sense of satisfaction and I plan to continue working on various community service projects in the future. Born and raised to Israeli parents, I am benefited with bilinguality, traveling overseas, exposure to other cultures, and insight on global
Assisting others is something I always want to do and is a reason I have participated in HOSA so heavily. Looking back on my years spent participating in HOSA. I am entirely grateful for the club I have found so much solace n and learned so much
I am fortunate to have been given an opportunity to participate in prestigious organizations that have helped me develop my leadership skills. Throughout junior year I participated in New Century Leadership with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. I was blessed to connect with students from various schools in the area and visit organizations across Lubbock County that makes West Texas unique. Being able to gain knowledge about the components of Lubbock that do not receive the receive they deserve provided me with a new appreciation for my
