Educational System in Progress Elementary, middle, and high school years are meant to prepare students for their college life and their life in the real world. However, students may not be receiving the proper encouragement and preparation for what to expect in their future. The failure in college education is a result of the technology advancement in schools, a far too complicated graduating system, and a way of teaching with too low of standards. When students are not receiving the proper preparation for college in their earlier years, they are not guaranteed to be as successful as they should be. Studying for a test is commonly done on a site or app called Quizlet rather than individually written out in pencil on flashcards. Classroom work is more commonly done on online sites rather than as a worksheet in front of them.
A lot of classroom work is done online rather than with a textbook and paper. In the past, students carried around thick textbooks and notebooks. Now in this time period, tablets or laptops are all the student needs throughout the school day or class-time. Instead of giving a student a book and a worksheet to work on where they have to read and think about the work they are doing, students have the capability of googling each question given and use the first answer they can find because of easy access. Because of classwork being done online rather than in books in today’s classrooms, many professors or teachers “find it difficult to imagine teaching without the internet”(Maloney). Many professors use the internet as a way to connect with their students through email or by mass sending the assignment to the entire class. Smart Boards have replaced many overhead projectors in many classrooms in a range of different schools. Technology is creating a form of laziness in students and teachers due to not wanting to work with all the potential they have. Growing up, parents, teachers, and elders always emphasize the importance of an education to the younger generations. High school students are pushed and encouraged towards college for the next big step in their life. By the time kids step into high school it’s drilled into their heads that to make something of oneself they need to pursue a college education. In reality, are high school graduates even prepared for the challenges that they will soon face? High schools are not preparing their kids for the “college experience” that in turns leaves them lacking the know-how they will need for the workforce.
In the article “Technology Changing how students learn, Teachers Say” many different surveys and experiments were constructed to see what the response were toward technology changing the way we think. As stated “roughly 75 percent of 2,462 teachers surveyed said that the Internet and search engines had a “mostly positive” impact on student research skills” (Richtel).This means that majority of the teacher do agree that the internet is making a positive effect on the children. Using technology in the educational field is a different approach on how the student my able to learn or grasp the whole content of that topic or subject. The internet doesn’t only help out with the student learning but it is already help the teacher. Through the internet they can exam the progress of class by averaging out the online homework or test that may be given out to the class.
Alfonzo Porter, a publisher for The Washington Post, is a strong believer that technology has caused massive problems when it comes to educating students. The publisher mentions that student are losing interest in school and becoming more distracted with their cellular devices. In the newspaper, Porter writes, “76 percent of teachers believed students are being conditioned by the internet to find quick answers, leading to a loss of concentration.” Alfonzo Porter believes that students are not taking advantage of technology, instead, they are manipulating it. In today’s modern society, there is a higher percentage of students using their cellphones to find answers, compared to students that are properly reading a book to find solutions to their problems. This issue is leading students becoming less interested in expanding their knowledge.
A very important part of life is education. In order to acquire a satisfying education, one should complete high school prior to college. College and high school have two different levels of education, but both are trying to further student’s knowledge. As recent high school graduates and college freshman’s many can clarify similarities and differences between the two. The World Wide Web had revitalized education by making it easier, and more efficient to teach. Although books are great means of learning, the process of looking up everything in them was both tedious and time consuming. In present days, students possess the power to hold all information at the press of a button. This convenience saves time and allows students to learn specifically what they need. Today, children would be at a disadvantage if they did not have Internet access at home. One article stated that children at their school are given laptops to aid in their learning; however, nine percent of the children do not have Internet access at home. With a converted curriculum shifted towards research and project based learning, it is impossible for these children to do what is expected of them in class (Monahan, 2014). Technology has made great advances on a global scale, especially within the last half century. Works of fiction and informational texts have addressed the numerous influences of modern innovation. Technological advances can be both beneficial and detrimental to society.
The opportunity exists to place the liability of underprepared students on secondary education; concentrating on a flurry of mitigating factors existing within secondary education. Learners may arrive underprepared because they had not planned to attend a postsecondary school; possibly, a high school college track was not studied. Students may have originated from underprivileged school districts and communities, and may not have had the advantages of solid school budgets, staff, or technology. First-generation students may also prove to be underprepared, as they exhibit uncertainty as to what is required for college preparation. Inappropriate high school promotion or an academic skill gap demonstrates another pool of students presenting as underprepared. Subsequently, students may have suffered a delay between initial knowledge acquirement and postsecondary enrollment; recognized when a required high school course may have concluded in the junior year with over a year break in preparation. Realistically, there are numerous causes we can attribute to students arriving on campus underprepared. The true motivation to designating fault is to vitalize change; to design programs, at both the secondary and postsecondary levels, to prepare students to be ready to learn and develop at a college-level.
There are increasing numbers of students leaving high school that are under-prepared for the next step in their life, college. Several have no idea what to expect when they leave home and enter college. A student should be equipped for college, for several it will rest on their parents, school counselor, teachers, friends, and research. It appears at this time it is not happening to a large number of students. There are various problems that contribute to the students being under-prepared for college.
There are many complications caused by the recent advancement in technology. In recent years, the people of the world have experienced this technological advancement firsthand. Though, even with all the upgrading, we, as a worldwide community, aren’t using machinery to better the world. People have become too connected to technology, we need to get off it every once in awhile.
The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge.
