In the US Constitution, our first amendment states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” To place it is simpler terms, any person in the United States of America has the freedom to express their opinions in any way they want, without the threat of the government oppressing them. We are the only nation in the world with this amplification in our constitution. It frames us to be a source for many to express their own opinions freely. Censorship belittles the prospects of the United States’ freedom of a liberal education system and as a florid free society. We as American usually overlook or undermine our right to free exercise of whatever we want. Our first amendment places us above all else in the world. We can protest, believe, and speak however one chooses to. America is a place where you will not be revised of your sentiment by the government, or in some cases the military. Many counties jail or kill people who try to speak their minds. Students in colleges or universities may have to take the bold risk to protest the things they oppose or belief in. They could place their families and loved one in danger just for conveying their ideas to others.
In places of education, students have free will to voice faith, outlooks, and theoretical; without the fear of their voice being silenced. Institutions of education should be places where students and staff can discuss their different opinions and viewpoints, and grow, understand, and learn from each other. Our spoken minds can connect us and bring understanding and tolerance to others; if we have the ability to share those differences in whichever place we see fit. That is why free speech in places of education is so important. The people of so many US campuses are diverse in every aspect.
