To Kill A Mockingbird’s Symbolism.

Why is the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee named such? Much of the symbolism within this novel and the title directly relate to the scuffing and poisoning of the good and innocent people of this world, a.k.a., the slaughter of mockingbirds. As you can tell from the title, one of the major symbols in this novel is mockingbirds. There are several mockingbirds with Tom robinson being the most obvious one, and others being Atticus Finch, Arthur Radley, Mr. Avery, Helen Robinson, and Jean Louise Finch.

Tom Robinson was a very helpful man and a hard worker, yet after Mayella Ewell sexually assaulted him he was put to trial for his life. In the trial the Ewells testify that Tom raped and beat Mayella, …show more content…

Avery, Jean Louise Finch(Scout), Atticus Finch, and Helen Robinson. Mr. Avery is considered to be a mockingbird because the kids think of him as a mean person, yet when Miss Maudie's house went up in flames he was one of the last people to get out after helping to save her belongings. Scout is a mockingbird because when Jem lost his temper at Mrs. Dubose’s, he hurt her even though she hadn’t done anything bad. Atticus Finch is another mockingbird because he tries to have the truth prevail and save Tom Robinson’s life, but the town persecutes him because of it. Helen Robinson was Tom’s wife, and later his widow. She is yet another example of a mockingbird because of what Bob Ewell did. Bob firstly framed her husband of rape which resulted in his death, then harassed her on her way to work every morning. He only stopped his harassment when her employer, Mr. Link Deas, verbally threatened him.

So the book is named To Kill a Mockingbird because the major conflicts revolve around harming innocents. Tom Robinson and Arthur Radley are the major mockingbirds, but they aren’t the only ones.
