In William Golding’s novel “The Lord of the flies” there are more symbolic differences then similarities between the conch and the pigs head. Two differences that were in the novel was that the conch symbolised order and the pigs head on the stick symbolised the evil within them. Secondly the conch and the Pigs head on the stick show different types of power. And finally a similarity was that both the Conch and the Pigs head on the stick were broken in rage and anger.

But the conch soon lost all its order when it was smashed into thousands of tiny white fragments, (pg. 200). “Roger leaned all his weight on the lever”, (pg. 200), this let a great rock come down which it then struck piggy which he then travelled through the air and the conch smashed. Jack says, “There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The Conch is gone, I’m Chief”, (pg. 201). Now the Conch was gone Jack was now chief and he then tried to kill Ralph showing that all order was now lost. The Pigs head on stick symbolised the evil within them. The Pigs head on the stick first became when Jack puts the pigs head on the stick and said, “This head is for the beast, it’s a gift” (pg. 150), after Jack and everyone had left Simon stayed behind and the beast started talking to him the pigs head says, “I am part of you, close, close, lose”, (pg. 158).
