While Jefferson’s “six objects of public education” could certainly have become a benchmark for what our education system could become, there have been a number of reasons that various groups have given for strengthening our education system (Hochschild & Scovronick, 2003, p. 17).

Ravitch discusses that one purpose was aligned with Herbert Spencer’s thoughts that education should be “preparing us for a complete living” (2000, p. 27). She later adds a secondary reason that includes equalizing society and cites Lester Frank Ward in stating that “access to knowledge was the key to all social progress” (2000, p. 29).

As you read the assignments for Task 1, it was clear that prior to revolutionary America educational opportunities were mostly dependent on churches, or perhaps paid tutors, and it was only offered to certain groups of people. In this instance, the government had to step in in order to create a more educated citizenry for the growing democracy. It also was important for the federal government to broaden the definition of public education for all to include the less fortunate (ex. freed slaves, immigrants, African Americans during the civil rights movement, Title IX, children with disabilities). Had the government not intervened, would that not have endangered the progress of the country? Unfortunately, it’s also important to look forward and realize that something must be done. Local districts and state budgets are failing education and recent federal policy (specifically No Child Left Behind) had significant flaws. Something must be done federally to expand again to both encourage, and most importantly support, states to raise academic standards. It cannot be achieved without the federal government as, in my opinion, its impossible for us as a nation to succeed with thousands of local school districts making their own decisions.
