“The Restoration of the Athenian Empire” Our walls are crumbling and our fleet is minute. We here in Athens are unable to collect tribute from other city-states and are often in threat of being attacked. Our fleet is defenseless and weak. The Democratic fraction, propose that we spend our time and hard earned money on the rebuilding of our walls and fleet. That way Athens can dangerously collect tributes from other Greek city-states. The Democrats also would like to commence in hazardous military voyages with our insubstantial navy. Hoping the result brings forth great rewards.

During the times of Ancient Greece, two major forms of government existed, democracy and oligarchy. The city-states of Athens and Sparta are the best representatives of democracy and oligarchy, respectively. The focus of the times was directed towards military capabilities, while the Athenians were more interested in comfort and culture. It was the oligarchy in Sparta that put a war-like attitude as its first priority and best met the needs of Ancient Greece. These factors empowered Sparta and led to the development of an authoritative and potent state. Other contrasting issues included women’s rights, social classes, and value of human life.

In Athen, “Schools taught reading, writing, and mathematics, music, poetry, sport, and gymnastics”. In Sparta, “Boys were taken from parents at age seven and trained in the art of warfare. They were only given a cloak - no shoes or other clothes, and not enough food so they had to steal (to learn survival skills)”. Overall, I think Athens is better and safer to live in then Sparta.

Since ; Athens was a democracy I feel that this better benefitted the citizens living their because it allowed citizens to vote for what they agreed with and what they opposed. For example in Document E it stated that there was an Athenian assembly and they had the power to pass laws, set budgets, and declare war. Whilst in Rome all of the decision making was in the hands of the Senates. All of this could not happen unless the Citizens came to vote. Athens and Sparta were two powerful city-states, different from each other where Athenian democracy focused on economic advancement, while Sparta oligarchy focused on military force. Democracy is a system of government where citizens have the right to vote, whereas oligarchy is a system of government where only a group of people is in control and only their opinion or decision that were taken into consideration. Leading to the thesis statement that people are better served by Athenian democracy than the Spartan oligarchy, supported in three evidence points. Firstly, Athenian democracy allowed citizens participation in government that gave them freedom to vote and take part in legislation. Secondly, the Athenian government provided Athenian men better education, by being taught how to read and write to reach their academic advancement. Only boy citizens attended private schools and would learn about poetry, literature, math, and science from ages 6-17.This was needed in order to become a citizen and carry out duties. This quote explains that the citystate of Athens felt that it was essential for men to be educated in order to be an important citizen within their culture. Also, as part as the Athenian boys took part in sports. Athenians believed that it was important to not only study subjects but also to have physical activity in order to have men with strong minds and bodies. Additionally girls did not receive the formal education that the boys got, they were educated at home by their mothers. Because women were not apart of the government in Athens, they were simply taught household duties. Only if they were part of a wealthy family they learned to read and write.

Athens creates laws to help benefit all people.Athens has a democracy where they have equal justice, class/status does not matter. I imagine that life in Athens was nearly perfect. The smart Greeks built their great city on top of a mountain, because of this the they were easily able to defend themselves from enemies. They also built this amazing city close to a busy port, which gave them many choices in trading. They also had many mines which provided superior building materials. In ancient Greece Athens and Sparta were rival city-states. They would help each other if necessary, but were both highly popular city states. Athens would have been a better place because people in Athens were educated and could choose their own career, Athens was ruled by the people, and there was more food,water, and better weather. As you may know Ancient Greece is full of many city-states and you also may know that each city-state had its own government, Economy, Education, and most likely, slaves. As you may also know, usually, not always, city-states fight. Two of the most important city-states, Athens and Sparta and they not only had different forms of government, but they had very different ways of life. Plus, if anyone had a choice to either live in the city-states Athens or Sparta, Sparta should definitely be the city-state they choose or at least what I think. Sparta is way better than Athens because their army was bold and protective and girls received some education, plus women had more freedom in Sparta than most other city-states.

Hello mother, I am having an interesting time here in Athens. I was so lucky to get permission to leave the city. Not many girls my age can say they have left Sparta. I’ve noticed that they are very studious people, and all the men know how to read and write. They put a lot more focus on the intellectual side of life, and the men aren’t forced to become soldiers. Most of the male citizens only participate in government and don’t have other jobs. They are very proud of their government, though I think it seems rather complicated. They have many different groups like the Council of 500 and the Assembly which is made up of all the land owning men in Athens.

Athens and Sparta were great cities in ancient Greece time. Most of today’s countries owns some of their success to the ideals and examples left behind by those great cities. Even though these cities were similar in greatness, they were different in some ways. Athens was opened to other ideals while Sparta was focused on the path of a warrior. But how were their government structured to have such impact on modern society?

Back in Ancient Greece, women didn’t have very much freedom compared to a man. So a usual woman in Greece usually worked as a maid or a servant. But in Athens, they had a bit more freedom than that. Women were slaves, but treated very kindly. They could even visit other citizens houses. If wealthy enough, young girls could attend school! Athens would be the right choice for me because you don’t need physical training as a woman, and get to go to special events, like theatre. Also, you have more freedom and you’d get to raise your kids. That would therefore, lead a better life.
