Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton follows the footsteps of stories such as Romeo and Juliet and tells the story of our protagonist, Ethan Frome, and his forbidden love with a star crossed lover. Throughout the story, Ethan's opinions and decisions regarding his wife Zenna and the woman he loves Mattie lead to his downfall. Three opinions that cause Ethan to his downfall are that he should lie to Zenna and not drive her into town, that he should try to pursue Mattie, and to get on the sled with Mattie at the end of the novel. The first of Ethan's opinions that led to a destructive direction was lying to Zenna saying he couldn't drive her to the doctor. The first reason this was destructive was because he had to lie about getting the money early
