The time period in which the story, Everything I Never Told You by Celestine Ng is modern and realistic. It’s easier to relate to the story and the characters in comparison to the other texts we’ve read this year, because the author mentions places and activities people might still know today. Additionally, the writing style is straightforward unlike Romeo and Juliet. When reading the story, I developed a distaste for all the characters except Nath and Lydia. In my opinion, Ng purposely portrays the parents in a negative light, in order to justify the behavior of the children. Ng writes, “That long-ago day, sitting in this very spot on the dock, she had already begun to feel it: how hard it would be to inherit their parents' dreams. How suffocating
In the third chapter of Lies My Teacher Told Me, the author, James W. Loewen continues the topic of history teachers and textbooks not providing its students correct information, or leaving out details that are important to the specific topic of discussion The first specific topic Loewen discusses is the first settlers of what we now know as the United States. He describes that his students mostly said the first settlers were white men in the 1620s. Loewen then informs the reader that the first settlers besides the Native Americans were African slaves. He then describes that new settlers all over the world took over numerous areas of the United States in the 1500s.
Parenting is an ancient task that, till this present century, has not yet been perfected. It is a challenge that many mothers and fathers do well in while others unquestionably fail in. In Romeo and Juliet, both sets of parents are completely unaware of their children's thoughts, desires, and intentions. Not only is there a lack of communication between the parents and their children, but the parents also seem to have no interest in making an effort to know or understand their children. Therefore, as a result of their neglectful parenting , the classic love story ends in the suicidal deaths of both Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy that could have been avoided had their parents practiced better parenting skills such as interest, and communication or understanding.
I do not know if there is any other field of knowledge which suffers so badly as history from the sheer blind repetitions that occur year after year, and from book to book.
I disagree with Lauren Slater’s theory that throughout a person's life, one will only surround themselves with ideas and people similar to their own because, it is easy to see that people enjoy controversy and over the course of our lives, our beliefs and ideas can change.
In the textbook ‘Lies my Teacher told me’, James W. Loewen talks about how the monstrosities committed by the american troops in Vietnam have been covered up throughout history, especially in american textbooks. One line states “ We have destroyed their two most cherished institutions: the family and the village. We have their land and their crops… We have corrupted their women and children and killed their men.’’ No textbook quotes king’’’ This quote is important because it proves my point that all of the american textbooks published to date, do not contain any such content related to the dark side of the actions that the american troops carried out in Vietnam.
“Hell You Talmbout”, a new protest song from Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland collective, is striking in its simplicity. Monáe (along with fellow Wondaland member Jidenna) made headlines yesterday for marching in Philadelphia against police brutality, and this song sounds like an extension of that march. Drums dominate the scene; they are at once tribal but organized, like a powerfully primal marching band. The lyrics are simple as well, but there’s nothing more to say - “Walter Scott - say his name! Jerame Reid - say his name! Philip White - say his name!” Three men who died at the hands of police, all in the last year; all three are widely considered to have been unfairly killed. These are not the only three, either. Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell, Freddie Gray, Aiyana Jones, Sandra Bland, Kimani Grey, John Crawford, Michael Brown, Miriam Carey, Sharonda Singleton, Emmett Till, Tommy Yancy, Jordan Baker, and Amadou Diallo make up the rest of the verses. Their deaths range from days gone by, where racism

Technology is something we use every day, we use it to research we use it to communicate with people. Though some people can be skeptical and on the fence with technology, they want to know if it helps us or hurts us. They want to know if we can do anything on our own without the help of technology. Even though that people feel like that Michaela Cullington author of “Does Texting Affect Writing?” looks at both sides of the argument surrounding technology effect on writing and ultimately shows how it doesn’t affect writing. Likewise, Clive Thompson author of “Smarter Than You Think” also has a stand point on how technology and shows it helps us not harm us in the way people think. After reading Cullington’s article it provides example of how
The central idea of this article is that you think that you never eaten a bug but you already did. The author supports this central idea by in paragraph 5 of the article “I Hate to Break it to You, but You Already Eat Bugs” says, “Staples like broccoli and canned
Everything I Never Told You by Chelsea Ng is a fictional novel about a family in Ohio during the 1970s who were different than others, but still desperately trying to fit in. The book demonstrates how being different during this time period can cause a family to break apart. James, a Chinese man, and Marilyn, an American woman, are the parents of Nath, Lydia, and Hannah. The family struggles through racial inequality for being a couple of mixed races, and it only seems more difficult when Lydia was suddenly found dead in a pond. It was later revealed that Lydia had committed suicide because she couldn’t handle anymore of being the container for her mother and father’s dreams.

Domestic violence happens more than we know. It can range from physical violence to emotional abuse. It also does not occur only to the women in the relationship but to the men as well. Melody Graulich writes about how she never knew her grandfather was abusive to her grandmother until after he passed away. Graulich turns to different literature of domestic violence to understand what her mother and grandmother went through and sees her grandfather in a different light.
As I come of age, I do not only learn in the classroom as a student taking English 1 at Sage Hill but in general as a teenager learning how life works. In this past school year alone, I have learned the importance of communication and the concept that friends come and go, but family stays forever. These lessons relate to the themes of Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You.
In the first chapter of They Say I Say, it talks about the indication of "They say" which in other words mean state your ideas as a response to others. The point of this is to teach students how to interpret and reply to the writings of others. Many student needs to first learn how to originate an idea in their own writing so that they can determine what their thesis will be. The idea can be someone else’s or it can be their own idea but they need to learn the right ways of introducing these concept or ideas into their specific areas of writing. TS 13 suggests that many people must remember that when going into a conversation one must start with what others are saying about a particular topic or idea and then utilize their own opinion as
I have sat down about five different times to write this post, and each time I can't bring myself to do it. Not because I am ashamed, but because I don't want it to be real. I have been fighting this reality for the past few weeks. Because it is a part of my life that I have not wanted to give up, I honestly am having a hard time saying, "Jesus I give this to you"... As you read this I am sure that you are becoming a little worried as to what I am talking about, but I assure you when I tell you... You might laugh, because it is so selfish of me...
